Brown grabbed the checkered flag in the first race of the season for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series – but then he went into a long winless streak. Add to that the frustration of breaking his ankle
while doing yard work two weeks ago, and Brown was eager to get things turned around.
The No. 83 car of Brown had been the fastest qualifier three times this season, but he still turned up winless. On Saturday, Lee Jeffreys of Wallburg turned the fastest lap instead, relegating Brown to
starting on the outside front row.
Both drivers knew the race might very well be decided in the fight for the lead on the first lap. Jeffreys lost a little traction as his tires spun, allowing Brown to dart past him on the outside to take over
the top spot.
“We took off pretty even I think,” said Brown. “I don’t know if he spun the tires a little bit or what, but I was able to pull him up off of turn two and get my second win of the year.”
“We raced clean and I got beat,” said Jeffreys. “I didn’t have the best car. I had a good car for qualifying, but the race was just a tick off. So we’ll go home and work on it and see if we can’t get better for
next week.”
After the initial start, Brown had relatively smooth sailing at the head of the pack – until things started to get heated up during the final laps as he and Jeffreys approached lapped traffic.
“Those cats are racing too, and I saw them racing side by side,” said Brown about the slower traffic. “I’m not about to go to the outside because they were side by side. So I decided that I’ll protect the
bottom - and if Lee gives me a shot or goes to the outside, it wasn’t meant to be,” said Brown. “I just decided to be patient there and it worked out.”
Jeffreys finished right behind Brown in second, with Burt Myers of Walnut Cove finishing in third.
The O’Reilly Auto Parts “Madhouse Scramble” sent Joseph “Bobo” Brown of Winston-Salem to the lead for the start of the second Modified 25-lapper, with Michael Clifton of Walkertown starting beside
him on the outside.
They fought side by side for the lead during the initial lap until a caution flag set Joseph Brown at the head with Clifton on his bumper. Brown led the way for several laps but began to experience car
issues.
With smoke and fluid coming out of his car, Joseph Brown received the black flag. In protest, he continued to race – causing him to no longer be scored and handing the lead over to Clifton. The No. 50
of Clifton sailed forward to take the checkered.
“I’m not mad at Michael Clifton. He ran me clean,” said Joseph Brown. “I’m mad at the race track. I got robbed once again.”
“It was hitting the windshield of my car,” said Clifton about the fluid. “With the lights hitting the windshield with the grease on it, it made a glare.”
“He wasn’t making it too awful slick but it was getting slicker every lap. You could see the glaze on the track where he was spraying it out in the corners,” said Clifton, who didn’t enjoy winning by having
Brown black-flagged – but he said he’ll still take it. “I’ve lost some that way. It always comes around and I guess it was my time.”
Randy Butner of Pfafftown finished on Clifton’s bumper in second. Chris Fleming of Mount Airy took third.
In the Classic Muscle Sportsman Series, Michael Adams of Yadkinville held off Zack Clifton of Walkertown to grab the checkered flag in the first 20-lapper. Taylor Branch of Lewisville brought home the win
in the second race.
Billy Gregg of Lexington took the victory in the 20-lapper for the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series. In the Summer Shootout Stadium Stock Series, Junior Smith of Lexington and Jason Keaton of
Mocksville each won a 15-lapper.
