Jankowiak wins both TQ & Sportsman Features

The “Mighty Modifieds” returned to the historic Elegant Builders Raceway Park oval on Saturday for the first race in the Hoosier Modified Series. The “Mr. Modified 100” saw a field of experienced veterans and Modified rookies, each looking to take home the first win in the three race series. Also on the nights racing schedule were the After Hours Imaging TQ Midgets, the 4 Cylinders, the Street Stocks, and the Sportsman.

The nights events started out on the inner oval with the TQ Midgets. Brandon Zavarella and Timex Morgan brought the field to the green flag and the two leaders raced side by side for the lead while Andy Jankowiak raced behind them in third. While Morgan managed to lead lap one, Zavarella finally cleared him to lead the next few laps. Jankowiak, however, was on the move and slotted by Morgan for second and then passed Zaveralla for the lead on lap four. By the halfway point of the 20 lap feature Jankowiak had a sizable lead over Morgan, Zavarella, and Erick Musto. A late race yellow flag and double fie restart did nothing to shake Jankowiak’s possession of the top spot. By crossing the finish line first, Jankowiak notched his second TQ Midget feature win of the season.

Next up was the 4 Cylinder feature and rookie Garrett Cleversley was the polesitter with Derrick Brant next to him on the front row. Cleversley and Brant raced side by side, battling hard for the lead. Cleversley took over the top spot for the first four laps, but Brant raced back to lead the next two. On the move to the front though was Al Piasecki, who had started in sixth position. Piasecki took the lead on lap six and immediately set up building a lead on the rest of the field. Behind him, Brandon Sherwood, who had started tenth, Jayme Thompson, who had started seventh, and Peter Koschuk who had started last in thirteenth spot were slicing and dicing their way to the front. As the race stayed clean and green, Sherwood raced up to second while Thompson made her way to third. Koschuk passed almost the entire field in making his way up to fourth but it was Piasecki who crossed the finish line first at the conclusion of the 20 lap feature, taking home his second 4 Cylinder feature win of the season and becoming the first repeat winner in the division in 2013.

With some drivers running both the Sportsman and Modified divisions, the Sportsman feature event was moved up in the night’s schedule. Sherri Hogan, Kevin Miller, Mark Pennell, and Tom MacLeod made up the first two rows of the starting grid and on the start it was Miller to the lead. Hogan, Pennell, and MacLeod race nose to tail for second on back but soon MacLeod made his move, going past both Pennell and Hogan to take second. By lap 15 Miller had built a considerable lead over MacLeod, who in turn lead Billy Burd. Andy Jankowiak, who had started last, was up to fourth by that point and on the move forward. While Miller cruised ahead of the field, the action between MacLeod, Burd, and Jankowiak was heating up as the three came together, running nose to tail. Jankowiak made his move to the outside of Burd for third and again used the outside of the track to pass MacLeod for second. Jankowiak set his sights on Miller and with each lap, took a small piece out of Miller’s lead. Miller seemed to have the advantage on the straightaways but Jankowiak was gaining ground in the turns. The game changed however on lap 28 as MacLeod spun down the backstretch and into the grass after contact with Burd. The ensuing double file restart erased Miller’s slim lead over Jankowiak and pitted them next to each other for the double file restart. Jankowiak took advantage of the situation and jumped into the lead. Miller was left to battle for second with Pennell and Burd, who after being sent tail for his contact with MacLeod, worked his way up to fourth with less than two laps to go. Up front, Jankowiak took the checkered flag as lap 35 was completed, with Miller, Pennell, and Burd finishing behind him. Jankowiak remains undefeated in the EBRP Sportsman division this year.

The Street Stocks were the next to take to the track and it was Mike Dalfonso Jr., Heather Weber, Jim Stein, Nate Straus, and Bob Heineman as the top five starters. The opening two laps were a bit of a scramble as Dalfonso got out of shape on the start along with Weber. The caution flag waved on lap two and a double file restart was called for. Stein, Heineman, Straus, and Weber brought the field down to the green and Stein jumped into the lead. Another quick yellow and another double file restart on the next lap still resulted with Stein in the lead although this time Heineman challenged him for the top spot. Stein prevailed, slotting in front of Heineman for the lead. Behind them, Straus, and TJ Cochrane were in hot pursuit. Cochrane soon passed Straus for third and then moved on by Heineman for second, passing him down low in turn three. Cochrane had a lot of track to make up however as Stein held a sizable lead over the field. Lap by lap though Cochrane cut into his lead and by the halfway point was running nose to tail with Stein. Behind them Heineman led Matt Druar, Straus, and Jake Lyon. Any lead or advantage any driver had over another was erased on lap 14 as Straus spun on his own in turn four while battling for position. On the double file restart, Stein led Cochrane, Heineman, Druar, and Lyon. Cochrane took advantage of the outside front row restart position and passed by Stein for the lead. Stein didn’t give up however and stayed glued to Cochrane’s bumper. With three laps remaining the yellow flag appeared again for contact between Druar and Heineman. On the double file restart Cochrane wasted no time in jumping into the lead over Stein, Lyon, and Straus. Cochrane took his first checkered flag of the season while Lyon passed Stein on the second to last lap for second.

The final feature event of the night was the Hoosier Modified Series “Mr. Modified” 100 and it was Erick Rudolph, Mike Leaty, Daren Scherer, Andy Jankowiak, Chuck Hossfeld, and Bobby Holmes making up the top three rows of starters for the feature. At the drop of the green flag it was Rudolph out to the lead with Scherer, Hossfeld, and Leaty behind him. The field quickly settled in single file but a yellow flag on lap 11 for the broke car of John Wilber brought them all back together. Again, Rudolph jumped into the lead while Hossfeld bested Scherer for second place. Again the field settled in single file with Rudolph leading Hossfeld, Scherer, and Leaty. Leaty soon began a march forward though passing Scherer low for third and by Hossfeld for second by lap 25. Leaty began creeping up on Rudolph and the top seven of Rudolph, Leaty, Hossfeld, Scherer, Holmes, Jimmy Zacharias, and Austin Kochenash held a half track lead over Mike Fiebelkorn Jr., Karl Hehr, Jankowiak, and company. The lead evaporated on lap 42 as the yellow flag appeared and mostly cars in the back half of the pack took advantage and pitted. The double file restart on lap 48 resulted in Rudolph taking the lead again and at the halfway point on lap 50 Rudolph led Hossfeld, Leaty, Scherer, and Kochenash. Another yellow resulted in the leaders hitting pit road for tires and adjustments putting Billy Putney in the top spot for the double file restart. He was joined up front by Holmes, Jankowiak, Fiebelkorn, and Bryan Sherwood. Jankowiak took the lead from Putney on lap 59 and began pulling away from the field. However, mechanical problems would soon plague the leader as Holmes passed by for the lead on lap 68. The yellow was displayed on lap 70 and Jankowiak retired his car for the night. Holmes now led the field with Rudolph, Leaty, Kochenash, Scherer, and Zacharias behind him. Rudolph was in hot pursuit of the lead while Scherer got by Leaty for third as Leaty swung too high out of a turn. On lap 75 Rudolph passed Holmes for the lead. Holmes continued a backward slide stuck on the outside groove as Scherer got by him for second and along with Hossfeld, Putney, and Leaty. With just five laps left to go Rudolph held a dominating lead over Scherer who in turn had room on Hossfeld, Putney, and Leaty. As the checkers flew, Rudolph would be the first to cross under them and capture the “Mr. Modified 100” trophy.
