Fireworks, Pocono Raceway Ticket Giveaways, TQ Midgets and Vintage TQ’s Highlight Mahoning Valley Speedway Saturday Night Action

Mahoning Valley Speedway begins the second half of the 2013 season this coming Saturday night, July 13, with a bang as a full card of racing is slated and there will be a huge Fireworks spectacle taking place at the end of the evening.

Along with all regular track classes which include Modifieds, Late Models, Street Stocks, Dirt Mods, Pro 4s and Hobby Stocks, the electrifying speedsters of the American Three Quarter Midget Racing Association (ATQMRA) TQ Midgets will be in action and they will be joined by the Vintage Division of the ATQMRA.

Plus representatives from Pocono Raceway will be on hand with special ticket giveaways for the upcoming GoBowling.com 400 weekend August 2-4. Sunday terrace grandstand tickets will be awarded to a lucky fan for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series 400 mile race on Sunday, August 4. The GoBowling.com 400 takes the green flag at 1:00 p.m.

And, there will also be a select number of Saturday general admission tickets to giveaway for the Pocono Mountains 125 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event, a 50-lap, 125-mile race set for August 3. With the Saturday ticket fans will also take in NASCAR Camping World Truck Series qualifying, final round practice for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series cars and the Truck Series race which is set for 1:00 p.m. that day.

The Pocono Raceway Pace Car, a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro SS, will be on display in front of the Mahoning ticket office plus as a special treat “Tricky the Fox” the official mascot of Pocono Raceway will be on hand with lots of goodies for the kids. Tricky will also help out with Kids Big Wheel Races at intermission.

TQ Vintage Division club president Gary Mondschein has indicated that close to 25 cars have already signed up to attend the celebration of the career of Tommy Williams and the Williams brothers. Tommy, whose career as a car owner in ATQMRA spans five decades, is excited and looking forward to Saturday night’s show.

“I really enjoy the vintage cars and what they have going is fabulous. I am deeply honored to receive the admiration of the guys,” said Williams, who will be joined by many past racing greats throughout the evening.

Aside from perfectly restored TQ’s that will be on track for heats and features, several very special cars will be on display including the No. 2 TQ Midget that was the very first open wheel ride of world renowned racing icon Mario Andretti. Fans will be able to get a close up look at all the vintage TQ’s as they will be pitted outside in the upper parking lot.

The contemporary TQ’s of the ATQMRA are always a fan favorite at the paved quarter mile oval as their 100 mph speeds are a sight best seen at such a tight bullring as Mahoning Valley. Matt Roselli won at Mahoning on June 1. He will again have reigning Modified and Late Model track champion Earl Paules as his teammate. Ryan Tidman is the current TQ point leader and is attempting to score his third consecutive club title for noted car owners Donna and Lenny Boyd.

Mahoning’s regular classes will compete in heat and features. Roger Coss is fresh off his first Modified win of the season and sits a solid third in points behind Eric Beers and Nevin George. Paules won his fifth Late Model race last week in the George Ramos, Jr., Memorial and remains tops in the standings. Chip Wanamaker has yet to win in the Street Stocks but his consistent finishes of top 5 and top 10s has enabled him to hold onto the point lead. Jeff Parker, Mike Stofflet and most recent winner Ricky Yetter have been battling all year for the top spot in the Dirt Mods. Likewise teenage sensations Kyle Strohl and Nick Baer are doing the same in the Pro 4s while a weekly grudge match wages on between Jeff Biegley and Cory Edelman in the Hobby Stocks.

Adult general admission for Saturday’s races is $15. $2.00 off for students, seniors 65 + and active military, must have ID. Children 10 and under are free.

Pit gates open at noon. There will be early paid practice from 12:30 to 3:00 at $25.00 per car. Regular warm-ups will be held from 4:00 – 5:00. Racing begins at 6:00.
