Chas Okerson seemed to be shot out of a cannon early on and maintained that pace for the entire 40-lap distance in winning the main event for Modified stock cars at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night. It was the first win of the season for the multi-time championship winning Freehold resident.

When the green flag waved there was a big scramble on the front stretch but Okerson was somehow able to slip through. He then held off the challenges of Lavallette’s Adam LaCicero early before stretching an impressive advantage.

With Okerson leading fans kept an eye on Freehold’s Steven Reed and Howell’s Eric Mauriello as they sliced through the pack toward the front. Bumpers were banging as this duo and others in the field fought for top positions. On the final lap Mauriello spun backwards into the third turn rail. Mauriello was credited with seventh while officials placed Reed to the rear of the field as hey felt he contributed to the spin.

Okerson was chased across the finish line by Holmdel’s Andrew Krause, Chris Hamilton of Oakland, Christian LaCicero of Lavallette and Adam LaCicero.

“The car was working much better tonight than it has all season,” Okerson said. “I got real lucky getting to the front early in the race. After that I just never looked back.”

Andrew Krause of Holmdel won the companion 30-lapper for the Sportsman cars. He battled with Howell’s Kevin Davison for the final third of the race before the duo touched on the final lap and Davison slipped from the top position. Davison was second at the checker flag, while Colts Neck’s Kevin Eyres and Robert Sutphin and Dom Fattaruso, both of Brick, wrapped up the top five.

The Limited Late Models were on the card with two main events. In the first 20-lapper Brian Doyle of Coram, N.Y. was victorious over Ken Matlach of Levittown, N.Y. and Phil Fortuna of Toms River. In the nightcap Matlach took the win after the car of Ray Minieri failed a post race technical inspection. Doyle and Brick’s Ronnie Mullen were second and third.

Steve Michel of Egg Harbor City enjoyed his first ever win in the Factory Stock 25-lap main event with Mullen second and defending champion Scott Riggleman of Manchester third. Nancy Hill later drove Riggleman’s car to victory in a special Ladies’ Race.

Jerry Stanzione of Keansburg crossed the finish line first in the 25-lap race for the 4 Cylinder cars. But when his car failed past race tech the win was awarded to Wall’s Brien Crosby. Mike Dorrer, also of Wall, Mike Wahl of East Islip, N.Y., Jason Meyers of Port Monmouth and Al Morales completed the top five.

This Saturday night (July 20) the speedway celebrates the summer season with “Beach Luau Night.” Fans are encouraged to arrive in their most colorful summer attire and special summer themed food will be offered at the refreshment stands.

On the speedway the 4 Cylinder cars are slated for a 50-lap main event, while the Modifieds, Factory Stocks and Legend Cars racers will also see action. Of special interest will be a 30-lapper for the Limited Late Model cars that will pay $750 to the winner if 10 or more cars enter.

Qualifying is slated for 6 p.m. and main event action is set for 7:00 p.m. Grandstand seating opens at 5 p.m.

Wall Stadium presents professional motorsports events on most Saturdays and Sundays during the summer months. The speedway is located on Route 34 in Wall Township, N.J., just one mile north of Garden State Parkway exit 98 and Interstate 195 exit 35B.
