Trevor Alspach raced through the pack to grab the lead in the closing circuits at Wall Stadium Saturday night to win the 30-lap Sportsman main event. The Willingboro resident’s win came on “Christmas in July Night” at the third mile high banked paved oval.

Rookie Jason Caruso of Howell led the initial 12 laps before former champ Kevin Eyres of Colts neck took command. Eyres led for the next seven circuits with Zack Alspach of Willingboro right on his bumper. On lap 19 the duo touched in the heat of battle and Eyres slipped up the track allowing Zack Alspach to take the lead.

Zack Alspach was then in the top spot but this one was far from over. His brother Trevor soon moved into contention and then rocketed into the lead on the outside lane with a few laps remaining. At the finish it was Trevor Alspach in for the win followed by Brick’s Robert Sutphin, Andrew Krause of Holmdel and Zack Alspach. When the cars of both Sutphin and Zack Alspach failed post-race inspections, Krause was promoted to second with Manasquan’s Ken Van Wickle, Dom Fattaruso of Brick and Eyres completing the top five.

“I knew that I had to go to the outside if I had a chance of winning,” Trevor Alspach said after the race. “I just drove it real hard to the outside on the restart and hoped that it would stick. It did.”

Mike Dorrer won a race for the hometown fans as he took the top spot in the headline 50-lapper for the 4 Cylinder cars. This race was wild with several competitors in contention for the win. Wall’s Dorrer both led and dropped out of contention in this wild race before recovering for the win. Beachwood’s Todd Pilla, Dan Birdsall of Howell, Al Morales and Jay Conrad wrapped up the top five.

Defending champ Scott Riggleman of Manchester battled with rival Ronnie Mullen of Brick most of the way before winning the 25 lap feature for the Factory Stocks. Riggleman and Mullen touched late in the contest before Mullen dropped to a sixth place finish. Steve Michel of Egg Harbor Twp., Brick’s Joe Mongeau, Andrew Krause of Holmdel and Ed Bischoff of Howell completed the top five.

Ken Matlach of Levittown, N.Y. won his second 20-lapper of the year for the Limited Late Model cars. Brian Doyle of Coram, N.Y., Mike Tillett of Bayville, South Toms River’s Jack Sayegh and Glen Conk of Jackson were second through fifth.

Buddy Sload of West Chester, Pa. won the 25-lapper for the visiting TQ Midgets while Nancy Hills of Manchester won the special 15-lapper for the ladies.
