For 65 years, Bowman Gray Stadium has been the home of the most powerful cars sanctioned by NASCAR – the Modifieds. And this Friday and Saturday,
challengers from across the nation – and even across the globe – will be coming to compete at the legendary Madhouse.
With a two-day show this weekend, race fans have the unique opportunity to see two nights of Modified racing. On Friday, it’s Racing Electronics twin 50s for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified
Series. Then on Saturday, the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour competes in the Kevin Powell Motorsports 199.
16-year-old Thomas Ferrando from Rians, France will return to the Stadium this Friday. Ferrando made his debut two years ago at the age of 14, hoping to gain some valuable racing
experience behind the wheel of a Modified.
He has amazed the Stadium veterans each time he’s made the visits to the States as his natural talent has been clearly evident. But Ferrando’s main objective isn’t to tangle with anyone but to
learn and gain some seat time.
There are, however, competitors coming with the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour who will be banging fenders and charging for the win.
11 drivers from outside of North Carolina will be invading and racing for the checkered, including competitors coming from Florida, the New England area, and even from Ontario, Canada.
Andy Seuss from Hampstead, NH has been a strong competitor in the Tour and sets his sights on victory on Saturday. But in particular, George Brunnhoelzl, III will be one to keep your eyes on.
Brunnhoelzl currently leads the points for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour with three victories this season in Tour events. He’s also the defending champion of the Kevin Powell
Motorsports 199, having grabbed his first Stadium win in last year’s 199-lapper.
But experience is on the side of the local heroes. Only three drivers have been fixtures in the tour each and every year: John Smith of Mount Airy, Jason Myers of Walnut Cove, and Burt Myers of
Walnut Cove.
And that’s not even mentioning the experience that racing at the Stadium week in and week out have given them.
Burt Myers has two wins in the 199-lapper, with Jason Myers having taken one victory. Burt Myers also has an impressive four poles under his belt.
Danny Bohn of Huntersville is not only competitive every week at the Madhouse, he was last year’s Rookie of the Year for the Tour – and surely one to take notice of this year. And naturally,
Tim Brown of Rural Hall – the Stadium’s defending champion and the owner of more Stadium Modified titles than anyone else – is always a force to be reckoned with.
The action will be so intense this Saturday that it can’t be contained to only one night – it’s a weekend of excitement with racing on Friday and Saturday at Bowman Gray Stadium.

come out to see the best racing in town for the absolute best price.
