Most drivers would be ecstatic with two victories and three poles in the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series. But Tim Brown of Rural Hall had set the bar
much higher for himself.
“I won eight races last year,” said Tim Brown. “So this isn’t the year I expected to have coming off of last year.”
But things turned around for Brown on Friday night at the Stadium as a good draw and a good car propelled him to this third victory of the 2013 season.
Brown turned the sixth fastest qualifying lap, but drew the outside pole when the top six redrew for starting position. Smooth driving veteran Randy Butner of Pfafftown drew the pole.
As the green flag fell, Brown powered ahead on the outside to get past Butner and claim the lead. But Brown soon felt the pressure of the outside row challenges from fastest qualifier Dean
Ward of Winston-Salem and points leader Burt Myers of Walnut Cove.
“The track was great tonight – it had good grip on the bottom and the top.
I was able to take the lead from the initial start from Randy on the outside, but I could feel that there was plenty of grip on the bottom for the restarts when I was on the pole,” said Brown.
But the inside groove worked for Brown. He grabbed the checkered, taking his third win of the season. “It’s about time we get back to Victory Lane – as hard as we work. It’s been a long time
coming,” said Brown.
The O’Reilly Auto Parts “Madhouse Scramble” sent Tommy Neal of Walkertown to the pole for the start of the second race, with Jason Myers of Walnut Cove starting on the outside-front row.
The two battled cleanly side-by-side for nearly three laps before Myers finally edged by Neal to secure the lead.
“When you’re out there for two or three laps, you’re already committed,” said Jason Myers. “And the cars behind you have already closed the gap up, and you’re not fast enough because you’re
side by side. You’ll either beat him or fall back to fourth. At that point we just had to hope he made a mistake or spun the tires or turned sideways or something - and it just worked out.”
But getting past Neal was just the beginning of Myers’s challenges. During each of four double-file restarts, Danny Bohn of Huntersville pulled up beside him – and Bohn was hammering the
rear of Myers every chance he had as well.
“These cars have bumpers on them for a reason – you’ve got to use them,” said Myers. “Danny did what he had to do to try to get by me.”
Myers held off the #53 car of Bohn to take the checkered for the second 50-lapper of the night, his fourth victory of the 2013 season. “We’ve just had an awesome car all year. You really get to
show how fast you are when you get out front and the other faster cars behind you are running with you.”
Dale Patterson of Winston-Salem won the 15-lapper for the Summer Shootout Stadium Stock Series, with Stephen Sanders of Winston-Salem and Kevin Hedgecock of Thomasville finishing in
second and third.
In the Legends Masters Division, Rodney Tharp of Thomasville grabbed the checkered, with Jordan Black of Winter Springs, FL winning in the Legends Pro Division. The Legends Young Lions
victory belonged to Stevie Johns of Mooresville, and Jay Coen of Dacula, GA won the Legends Semi Pro race.
Carson Werber of Iron Station brought home the trophy in the Bandoleros Bandits class, and John Holleman of Winston-Salem showed off his Stadium experience by winning the Bandoleros
Outlaws race. Former Stadium champ Johnny Johnson of Tobaccoville won the East Coast Flathead Ford race.
