Rookie Modified stock car driver Chris Lane never gave up!

Despite showing great driving skill and high speed often during this his rookie season, he has also suffered through his share of heartaches. In fact, just a week ago the Howell resident hit the fourth turn guardrail so hard that fans were worried about his well-being the his car’s right side had to be entirely rebuilt.

All that bad fortune turned around for Lane on Saturday night, however, as he fought off some of the best Modified stock car drivers in the business to win the 40-lap main event at Wall Stadium. It was his career first win.

Although Lane started on the front row this race was far from easy. First veteran Adam LaCicero of Lavallette hounded Lane before Freehold’s Steve Reed took repeated stabs at the leader. During the final few laps Howell’s Eric Mauriello taunted Lane to the checker flag. Lane held his ground with Mauriello, Brick’s Shawna Ingraham, LaCicero and Reed wrapping up the top five.

“I’ve dreamed about this ever since I was a little kid in the grandstands,” Lane said of his visit to the winner’s circle. “I’ve had a lot of tough luck this season and a lot of people from family, friends and sponsors have stood behind me. This win is for all of them.”

The Sportsman racers were also on Saturday night’s “First Responders Night” card with twin 25-lap main events. In the first race Brick’s Robert Sutphin fought off Andrew Krause of Holmdel to take his third win of the year. Trevor Alspach of Willingboro, Kevin Eyres of Colts Neck and Manasquan’s Ken Van Wickle completed the top five.

In the second Sportsman 25-lapper Zack Alspach of Willingboro grabbed his first win of the season over Howell’s Kevin Davison, Van Wickle, Trevor Alspach and Krause.

James Meyers of Port Monmouth notched his fourth win this season in the 25-lapper for the 4 Cylinder cars over Jerry Stanzione of Keansburg and Wall’s Cole Ormsbee. Todd Pilla of Beachwood and Wall’s Mike Dorrer were fourth and fifth.

Ken Matlach of New Hyde Park, N.Y. won his third Limited Late Model 25 lapper of the year over Coran N/Y/’s Brian Doyle, Mike Tillett of Bayville, Nick Shaw of Chatham and Jim Downey of Cliffwood Beach.

Brick’s Ronnie Mullen was leading the 25-lap Factory Stock nightcap when Holmdel’s Andrew Krause slammed the first turn rail. Although Krause was not injured, the steel guardrail was so heavily damaged that officials decided to stop the race and finish the final 15-laps this coming Saturday night.

This Saturday night (August 17) the speedway honors one of its fallen heroes with John Blewett III Memorial action. Blewett lost his life in a Connecticut racing accident six summers ago.

On the speedway the Modifieds will headline in a 76-lap main event, while the Sportsman cars, Legend Cars, 4 Cylinders and Factory Stocks will also be on the card. The Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club will also present beautifully restored racecars.

The final 15 laps of the postponed Factory Stock main event and qualifying are slated for 6 p.m. and main event action is set for 7:00 p.m. Grandstand seating opens at 5 p.m.

Wall Stadium presents professional motorsports events on most Saturdays and Sundays during the summer months. The speedway is located on Route 34 in Wall Township, N.J., just one mile north of Garden State Parkway exit 98 and Interstate 195 exit 35B. The speedway hotline number is 732-681-6400, while CKMotorsports@aol.com is the track’s email address. More information is also available at www.wallspeedwayracing.com.
