PREECE, FEARN, DOWLING, HAYES, & CASAGRANDE SCORE AUG. 23rd 5-STAR SERIES FEATURE WINS AT STAFFORD SPEEDWAY

Stafford Speedway returned to NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing action with a Five-Star Series event. Ryan Preece scored his division leading 8th and second consecutive win of the 2013 season in the 40-lap SK Modified® feature, Tom Fearn took down his fourth win of the season in the 30-lap Late Model feature, Chase Dowling took down his sixth and second consecutive win of the 2013 season in the 20-lap SK Light Modified feature, Andrew Hayes came home a first time winner in the 20-lap Limited Late Model feature, and Kyle Casagrande scored his second consecutive and third overall win of the season in the 15-lap DARE Stock feature.

In the 40-lap SK Modified® feature event, Tom Bolles took the lead on the outside of Zach Aszklar to set the early pace. Aszklar settled into second with Joey Cipriano and Dan Avery side by side for third. Ted Christopher was right behind Avery and Cipriano in fifth and right behind Christopher was Doug Coby and Eric Berndt.

Things settled down into single file until lap-8 when Cipriano made a move by Aszklar to take over second. Avery was still fourth behind Aszklar with Christopher right on his bumper as Bolles continued to lead the race. Christopher made a power move to get by both Avery and Aszklar in turns 3+4 on lap-11 to move into third behind Bolles and Cipriano.

Rowan Pennink and Ryan Preece were now lined up right behind Aszklar and they nearly both got by Aszklar for fourth on lap-13, but they settled back into line behind Aszklar. Preece got around Pennink and he made the move on the high side to get past Aszklar on lap-15. Christopher had also gotten around Cipriano for second and was looking at the bumper of Bolles' car when the caution came out with 17 laps complete as Aszklar spun in turns 3+4.

On the restart Christopher got a good run on the outside of Bolles to move into the lead. Preece followed Christopher by Bolles to move into second and he immediately began to pressure Christopher for the lead. Bolles was now back in third with Cipriano, Pennink, and Avery lined up behind him.

Christopher was able to hold Preece off until lap-26 when Preece made his move to take over the lead with a pass in turn 3. Cipriano was third, with Pennink fourth and Frank Ruocco was now in fifth. Bolles was back to sixth, just ahead of Avery, Danny Cates, Todd Owen, and Keith Rocco. The caution came out with 30-laps complete as Owen and Cates spun into the turn 1 wall.

Back under green Preece took the lead but Christopher as glued to his back bumper. Cipriano and Pennink touched wheels dueling for third place and they both spun in turns 3+4 to bring the caution out with 32 laps complete.

Preece and Christopher stayed side by side for a lap on the restart before Christopher fell back into line behind Preece. The caution came back out with 33 laps complete for a spin by Tommy Membrino, Jr. coming out of turn 4.

Preece and Christopher resumed their side by side fight for the race lead on the restart with Christopher hanging with Preece for a lap and a half before settling into line behind Preece. Rocco was up to third with Curt Brainard fourth and Eric Berndt fifth.

Christopher was looking to the inside of Preece but Preece was able to hold Christopher off to the checkered flag to pick up his 8th win of the 2013 season. Christopher finished second, with Berndt, Rocco, and Avery rounding out the top-5.

In the 30-lap Late Model feature event, Cory Casagrande took the early lead from the pole with Jim Peterson moving into second. Art Caruso did a half spin in turn 2 but was able to get moving and the race stayed green.

J.J. Hill got around George Nocera, Jr. to move into third on lap-3 and Rick Charette got by Nocera for fourth place on lap-4. Nocera continued to lose spots as Tom Fearn, Woody Pitkat, and Adam Gray all got by Nocera on lap-5. Nocera spun backwards into the turn 3 wall to bring the caution out with 6 laps complete.

The first restart got called back and on the next restart, Casagrande took the lead ahead of Hill but one lap after the restart, Hill tried a move down low to take over the lead but he spun in the middle of turns 3+4 to bring the caution out. Hill was able to rejoin the field at the rear as he did not sustain any damage to his car in the spin.

On the restart the inside line got bottled up and Kevin Gambacorta spun to bring the caution out. The next restart saw the same thing as Casagrande bottled up the inside line and Pitkat got into the back of Casagrande and both cars spun to bring the caution back out. This put Peterson and Fearn on the front row for the next restart.

Peterson took the lead while Peter Portante pulled alongside Fearn in a battle for second place. Portante briefly took the spot but Fearn fought back and took second. Fearn then moved by Peterson on lap-11 to take over the race lead. Behind them, Gray had moved into third with Michael Scorzelli fourth and Dennis Botticello was fifth. Right behind Botticello was Hill, who had recovered nicely from his earlier spin.

Gray got by Peterson for second and at the halfway point of the race he was right on Fearn's bumper for the race lead. Behind Fearn and Peterson, a melee broke out in turn 2 that involved the cars of Hill, Botticello, Gambacorta, and Peter Thickett to bring the caution out with 16 laps complete.

On the restart, Fearn and Gray were side by side for the lead, but they touched coming out of turn 4. As a results of the contact, there was a bottleneck at the front of the pack and Fearn was able to maintain control of his car while Gray spun backwards to bring the caution right back out. Fearn and Peterson were the new front row with Scorzelli and Portante lined up behind them for the restart.
The next restart saw Scorzelli spin through the frontstretch grass and collect the car of Paul Varricchio as he cam back onto the track to bring the caution right back out.

Fearn and Peterson were side by side for the lead on the restart with Fearn clearing Peterson after a lap. Charette was third with Thickett in fourth and Pitkat in fifth. Amazingly right behind Pitkat was Gray, who was spinning backwards only a few laps earlier. Gray was on the charge as he took fourth on lap-23 and he moved into third on lap-24. Fearn was comfortably in the lead ahead of Peterson, who had a comfortable margin over Gray with 5 laps to go. Another car that was having a great recovery drive was Hill in fifth place after being involved in two earlier incidents. Gray got by Peterson for second but he ran out of time to run down Fearn as Fearn took his fourth win of the 2013 season. Peterson finished third, with Pitkat and Hill rounding out the top-5.

In the 20-lap SK Light Modified feature event, Rich Hammann took the lead at the drop of the green. A multicar incident broke out with 2 laps complete that collected the cars of Tyler Hines, Rit Dulac, Dylan Campbell, Troy Talman, Todd Douillard, Tony Santangelo, Dylan Menditto, Bob Charland and several others as Hammann's car looked like it lost the engine and put fluid down onto the racetrack. In all, 11 cars were caught up in the turn 1 accident.

After the track was cleaned up the race went back to green with Jay Goff getting a good run on the outside of Payton Henry to take the lead. Chase Dowling followed Goff past Henry to move into second while Henry settled into third. Nick Salva made a move around Joey Ferrigno to move into fourth on lap-5 and he nearly made a move to the inside of Henry for third but Henry was able to hold him off.
Back up front Dowling was now alongside Goff for the race lead and he took the lead on lap-8, but the caution came out for Salva, who spun in turn 4.

Goff took the lead on the restart with Dowling settling into second. Dowling didn't stay behind Goff for long as he made a move to the outside of Goff in turns 3+4 and he pulled even with Goff at the line. The duo continued to fight for the lead side by side while Tony Membrino, Jr. was now up to third with Henry fourth and Tyler Hines fifth. Salva spun in turn 2 to bring the caution back out with 10 laps complete.

Dowling took the lead on the restart with Membrino now side by side with Goff for second place. Ronnie Williams was fourth and Henry was back to fifth. Goff held Membrino off and he then nearly made a pass on Dowling to retake the lead on lap-13, but Dowling was able to hold him off. Ferrigno spun through the frontstretch grass to bring the caution out with 13 laps complete.

Dowling got a good restart and powered into the lead on the restart with Williams pulling alongside Goff for second. Behind Williams and Goff was Hines, Salva, and Membrino. Goff nearly had a pass made on Dowling for the lead on lap-16, but Dowling was able to hold him off. Goff spun in turn 2 to bring the caution out with 17 laps complete.

Dowling and Hines were locked in a side by side race for the lead back under green. Salva made a power move to take over third place but Dulac spun to bring the caution out and set up a green white checkered finish.

Dowling got a good restart and there would be no side by side racing as he cleared to the lead. Hines was second with Williams getting around Salva for third. Williams spun in turns 3+4 coming to the checkered flag after contact from Salva but at the front Dowling was able to hold off Hines by a car length to take his sixth win of the 2013 season. Salva was moved to the last finishing car on the lead lap for the contact with Williams. Rounding out the top-5 behind Dowling and Hines was Goff, Membrino, and Henry.

In the 20-lap Limited Late Model feature event, Andrew Hayes took the lead at the drop of the green with Austin Bessette right on his bumper in second. D.J. Burnham quickly worked his way into third with Jesse Hinze and Duane Provost lined up right behind him.

Hayes and Bessette had pulled out to a nice lead over Burnham, Hinze, Provost, Josh Wood, and David Arute, but that lead was erased by the caution flag with 11 laps complete for a spin by Joe Nogiec in tuns 3+4.

Back under green Hayes took the lead while Burnham pulled alongside Bessette for second. Hinze was fourth with Provost, Josh Wood, and Arute lined up behind him. Burnham and Bessette ran side by side for 4 laps with neither driver giving an inch, which allowed Hayes to pull away and build up a nice lead. Burnham was finally able to get clear of Bessette and into second on lap-17 and now Hinze was dueling side by side with Bessette for third place.

Hinze got by Bessette and Josh Wood followed suit, but it was all Hayes as he took the checkered flag to pick up his very first Limited Late Model feature victory. Bessette fell back several more spots over the final two laps as he finished 6th. Burnham finished second, with Hinze, Josh Wood, and Arute rounding out the top-5 behind Hayes.

In the 15-lap DARE Stock feature event, the lead switched hands quickly right from the drop of the green. Bryan Iwaniuk led the first lap, but Alexandra Fearn moved to the lead on lap-2. Her lead was just as short lived as Iwaniuk's as David Comeau moved by Fearn for the lead on lap-3 and Johnny Walker moved into second behind Comeau. Fearn continued to slide backwards as Kyle Casagrande, Cliff Saunders, and Brandon Michael all got by Fearn to drop her back to sixth.

Casagrande moved around Walker to take over second place on lap-8 and Saunders did a half spin in turns 3+4 and came to a stop to bring the caution out with 8 laps complete.

Back under green Casagrande moved into the lead from the outside groove and Michael moved into second. Comeau settled into third with Walker fourth and Lavoie fifth. DARE Stock points leader Dave Secore was sixth, right behind Lavoie. Alexandra Fearn spun as the field completed lap 10 but she was able to get going and the race stayed green.

Frank L'Etoile, Jr. got around Secore for fifth place while Michael was still trying to catch up to Casagrande out front. Kris Fluckiger took a trip through the infield on lap-14 but he kept going and the race stayed green.

Casagrande led the field back to the checkered flag to pick up his third win and second consecutive win of the 2013 season. Michael finished second, with Comeau, Lavoie, and L'Etoile rounding out the top-5.
