08/24/13 - Brown Dominates but Can’t Stop Myers at Bowman Gray

Tim Brown turned up the heat on Saturday at Bowman Gray Stadium, dominating the Carolina Farm Credit 150 and grabbing his fourth 2013 win.

But it wasn’t enough to stop Burt Myers of Walnut Cove. Myers brought home the title for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series – his sixth Modified championship.

The tension started before the green flag fell as the Carolina Farm Credit 150 had the starting lineup set strictly by qualifying. Brown turned the fastest lap of the entire season – a scorching circuit
around the quarter-mile in only 13.085 seconds.

Brown had to battle for the lead with outside-pole-starter Lee Jeffreys of Wallburg through not only the initial start but also through multiple double-file restarts. Jason Myers of Walnut Cove
also tried his luck challenging Brown on the outside.

But Brown was able to hold on to grab the checkered flag in a commanding fashion. “The car was great tonight. We unloaded super fast in practice, blistered them for the pole, and smoked
them in the race,” said Brown. Yet, Brown wasn’t fully pleased with how his 2013 season went.

“We’ve not had the year that we hoped for coming off of the season that we had last year with eight wins,” said Brown. “If you look back, this was a good year – four wins, winning the two biggest
races, sitting on the most poles, the fastest lap, most laps led. It’s still a pretty good year, but we didn’t win the points. We want to win everything.”

Instead, the points crown belonged to Burt Myers. But he had his work cut out for him as he entered the final event. With a 27-point lead, only seven positions separated him from his brother
Jason Myers and John Smith of Mount Airy. It was the smallest final-race points margin since 2007.

“When you’re leading the points and you come over here for the last race – it’s like riding a motorcycle on the highway. You’re not worried about yourself so much as you are the people around
you – and that was so true tonight,” said Burt Myers.

Myers didn’t have enough of a points cushion to play it too safe, and Myers daringly took the outside row twice during double-file restarts. “I told the guys that I was going to race,” said Myers.

One particularly hairy moment came for Myers as he was caught between a rock and a hard place: between the slowing car of John Smith ahead of him and the aggressive bumps from Joseph
“Bobo” Brown behind him.

“It looked like John was really fighting his car,” said Myers. “I was content where I was, but John was having some problems with his car – so it was making me have to put pressure on John because
I was getting pressure from behind.”

“I was basically the only one who had anything to lose. I was just aggressive enough to where I didn’t take myself out of contention,” said Myers. “The sharks were in the water, baby – but we hung
it out.”

When the checkered flag waved, Lee Jeffreys finished behind Brown in second, with Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem coming in third. Jason Myers took fourth – earning him second place in the
points right behind brother Burt.

In the Classic Muscle Sportsman Series, Mike Robertson of Winston-Salem won the 40-lapper after the time limit expired at the 30-lap mark. Mack Little of Kernersville of Lexington entered the
event with a healthy points lead but had to sweat when involvement in a wreck sent him to the pits. Little returned quickly to the rear of the field and charged his way forward to clinch the title.

“My crew just won this for me. I had a tire that was going flat,” said Little.

Doug Wall secured the championship for the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series after both of his points rivals, John Holleman of Winston-Salem and John McNeal of Winston-Salem, went
to the pits early due to mechanical issues. David Sumner of Trinity was declared the winner after Tommy Zachary of Yadkinville failed post-race technical inspection.

In the Summer Shootout Stadium Stock Series, Chuck Wall of Lexington turned in a strong performance – battling from 14th up to the lead to grab the win and the Stadium Stock crown.
