Great side by side racing, mixed with short tempers short track style is what the fans at Mountain Speedway witnessed Sunday Afternoon. They also witnessed Berwick’s Brian DeFebo record his tenth Modified win of the year and also Walnutport’s Chip Wanamaker’s fifth Street Stock win by a bumper over Steve Shultz. John Banashefski of Wilkes-Barre stayed out of trouble to record his second straight and third overall Four Cylinder win of the season and Matt Mattern, Jr. of Mountaintop easily cruised to his sixth Factory Stock victory. Brendon Bock of Franklin Square, NY claimed his ninth INEX Legends victory and Matt Oddona took top honors in the INEX Bandolero division.

Donny Hartzell started from the pole position and led the opening circuit of the 30-lap Modified main event over Alan Creveling, Barry Callavini, John Fortin, Sr. and Amber Fortin. J. Fortin, Sr. didn’t waste any time and quickly climbed to the third spot before the yellow flag waved when Callavini’s car slowed on the speedway.

Green flag racing resumed and J. Fortin, Sr. grabbed the race lead. Brian DeFebo showed some muscle and drove his way up to second and then on a lap five restart, DeFebo overtook J. Fortin, Sr. for the top spot.

DeFebo, who started in the ninth position, continued to show the way over J. Fortin, Sr. at halfway. Jason Hearne ran in third, followed by Bobby Jones, who started in eleventh, and Todd Baer.

The top five battled hard over the second half of the show but finished in the same positions in which they ran at halfway, which earned DeFebo his tenth win of the year and fourth Modified track championship.

Donny Hartzell and Ken Vogel, Jr. were heat race winners.

Nick Ross started on the pole in the 25-lap Street Stock feature. Steve Shultz overtook him for the lead before a lap was complete and settled into second, where Charlie Castiglione, Chris Burge and Kevin Higgins trailed him.

With two laps complete Burge took third from Castiglione and Chip Wanamaker followed through as well. Two laps later Burge overtook Ross for second and trued to reel in Shultz for the lead.

Wanamaker pressured Burge as the event progressed and finally completed the pass for second on lap 18. Caution free to that point, Shultz had a comfortable advantage, but that went out the window when the caution flew on lap 23. Following the restart, Wanamaker took the lead by a bumper and the pair raced side by side to the finish, where Wanamaker was declared the victor. It was his fifth win of the year.

Charlie Castiglione and Nick Ross were heat race winners.

From the pole, Anthony Pugliese led the Four Cylinder to the drop of the green in the 20-lap showdown. He led the opening lap over Ray Fennell IV, Heather Fennell, Jay Skupski and Scott Adams. With three laps complete, John Banashefski, who literally appeared from nowhere, overtook H. Fennell, who was running second at the time. Banashefski reeled in the leader and took control of the event on lap five.

The first of two cautions waved on lap seven when R. Fennell IV and Pugliese bumped. With a flat right front tire, Pugliese slid up the track and clipped Skupski, ending his day after heavy contact with the turn four fence.

Green flag racing resumed and Adams overtook R. Fennell IV for second. He then battled Banashefski for the top spot until a quick yellow waved with three laps to go. Following the restart, Adams grabbed the lead but it was short lived, as Banashefski battled back to not only retake the lead, but to take the checkers for his third win of the season.

Adams crossed the line in second and was later disqualified for a rules infraction, which gave the position to Larry Spencer, III. R. Fennell IV, Heather Fennell and Ray Fennell III completed the top five.

Heat race victories went to John Banashefski and Ray Fennell IV.

The starting line up for the 20-lap Factory Stock feature was based from a Formula One style qualifying and Matt Mattern, Jr. was the quickest car.

Mattern led the field to the drop of the green flag and never bobbled en route to his sixth feature win of the season. Dan Pawlicki finished a career-best second, followed by Del Morgan and Frank Katona.

Alexandria Smith led the INEX Legends feature to the drop of the green flag in the 20-lap event, but the yellow flag flew before a lap was scored when Todd McCollum and Carl Jones tangled in turn one. At almost the identical time, Gary Ham made hard contact with the front stretch wall after something broke on his car while exiting turn four.

Green flag racing resumed and Vinnie Troia took the lead. Smith dropped back to second but her great track position was taken away when she was involved in a turn one incident with Brad Lowmaster.

Brendon Bock lined up in second for the restart and Bock didn’t waste anytime moving into the lead. Despite having a handful of restarts to close out the event, Bock held his line and went on to claim his ninth win of the year over Mike Carroll, Jr. Lowmaster battled back to finish in third, followed by Robert Silver and Artie Pederson III.

Robert Silver and Brad Lowmaster were heat race winners.
