After a frustrating 2013 season Adam LaCicero of Lavallette turned his year around by winning the 40-lap Modified stock car main event during Downs Ford Champions Night at Wall Stadium Saturday. By virtue of a sixth place finish Chas Okerson claimed the 2013 Modified Driving title. It was the Freehold veteran’s third Modified title in five years (2009, 2010 and 2013). Okerson has also enjoyed six championships in the Pro Stock division (2001 – 2006).

In Saturday night’s race LaCicero jumped to the lead early and with numerous skirmishes on the speedway behind him that was the safest place to be. In sharp contrast to the trouble he encountered through most of the campaign LaCicero stayed in front of the problems to take the win. Okerson on the other hand was involved in a first lap pile-up that forced him to the pit area for repairs. He then raced well within the top ten to nail down the title.

Rounding out the top five behind LaCicero were Zack Alspach of Willingboro, title contender Andrew Krause of Holmdel, Derek Hopkinson of Toms River and Jackson’s Jason Treat. Howell’s Eric Mauriello, who entered the race as Okerson’s biggest title threat, left the race with a sour motor on lap 22 and was credited with 13th.

“This makes the season feel better,” LaCicero, a Lavallette police officer, said of the race win. “I have to thank my wife, my father and everyone who has been helping with the car for this. It’s been a rough season.”

“I’m just glad this race is over,” Okerson said. “It was real wild out there tonight and it seemed that I was in the middle of a lot of trouble. It’s a long season and my dad, my wife and the crew stick with it all the way. You don’t win a title on your own.”

Kevin Davison of Howell won his 2nd main event of the year in the 30-lapper for the Sportsman cars. Colts Neck’s Kevin Eyres crossed the finish line fourth and that was enough to claim his fifth Sportsman crown (2007, 2009 – 2011, 2013). Trevor Alspach of Willingboro and Ken Matlach of Levittown, N.Y. were second and third while Marc Nappi of Howell was fifth.

In one of the closest point races of the year Brick’s Ronnie Mullen used a sixth place finish on the final point night to win the Factory Stock title by just one finishing position. Manchester’s Scott Riggleman did everything he could to steal away the title by winning the race but was forced to settle for second. Steve Michel of Egg Harbor Township, Jerry Koenig, Dan Birdsall of Howell and Union’s Joey Helberg completed the top five.

Another tight point race saw Mike Wahl of East Islip, N.Y. win the 4 Cylinder driving title by finishing fourth in the final point race. Jerry Stanzione of Keansburg won the 25-lap test over James Meyers of Port Monmouth and Wall’s Cole Ormsbee. Randy Hart of Brick was fifth.

Robert French of Howell won the 25-lapper for the Legend Cars but a second place finish for Willingboro’s Trevor Alspach was more than enough for him to claim his second crown. Zack Alspach of Willingboro was third, while Jim Davison of Bridgeville, De. and Middletown’s Joe McGrath wrapped up the top five.

Brian Doyle of Coram, N.Y. only needed to start the 25-lapper for the Limited Late Model cars to win the crown, but he raced to a convincing main event to nail down his first ever Wall Stadium title. Ken Matlach of Levittown, N.Y., Howell’s Elliott Wohl, Bill Vanderveen of Beachwood and Bayville’s Mike Tillett were second through fifth.

Although the Saturday night regular season has ended, plenty of fall action remains on the schedule. During the day on October 12 the fifth mile “inner oval” will be in the spotlight with the lucrative “War at the Shore” presented by Hamer Heating, Cooling and Refrigeration. On October 19 the stock cars will return for the annual “Spooky Spectacular” at 2:00 p.m. before the season ends on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend during the daylight hours with the 40th annual “Turkey Derby.”

Wall Stadium presents professional motorsports events on most Saturdays and Sundays during the summer months and special races in October and November. The speedway is located on Route 34 in Wall Township, N.J., just one mile north of Garden State Parkway exit 98 and Interstate 195 exit 35B. The speedway hotline number is 732-681-6400, while CKMotorsports@aol.com is the track’s email address. More information is also available at www.wallspeedwayracing.com.
