The first Annual NEPA Race Car Show at the Laurel Mall in West Hazleton is slated to take place the week of February 9, 2014. Mall officials and event promoter Dino Oberto recently confirmed the dates.

The NEPA Race Car Show will be a week long affair and will include all types of race vehicles for display.

“We’re very excited about bringing a race car show back to the Laurel Mall for the first time in several years,” said Oberto, who is a motorsports journalist for the Hazleton Standard-Speaker and Bloomsburg Press-Enterprise and is PR Director for Lehighton’s Mahoning Valley Speedway as well as member of the media staff at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond.

“We had been looking for the past few years to come up with the right date and not conflict with any other off-season events in the region and this year everything all fell into place nicely. The Laurel Mall is a perfect setting to showcase the many different types of racers we have in Northeast Pennsylvania.”

While race car shows at the mall had been done in previous years, it was mainly for nearby Mountain Speedway. Oberto feels that by having a non-affiliated event that is not directly tied into one specific speedway, it opens the door for a more diverse group of cars to be staged.
“If you were to drive an hour from any direction of the Hazleton area you can find a race track. Paved, dirt, road circuit and drag strips are all encompassed. Yes there is a strong emphasis on oval racing but in this area we also have a very respectable contingent of road and drag racers. This show will be an opportunity for all of them to shine in front of the public,” said Oberto.

“And, you couldn’t ask for a better location. The Mall is just off of I-81 and not far from I-80 making it easily accessible.”

Plans call for cars to enter on Sunday, February 9 after the Mall closes at 5:00 p.m. The show will then run through Saturday, February 15. Cars will be removed at the end of that day which is 9:00 p.m.

On Saturday afternoon of the show, driver interviews will take place and the “Best of Show” award will be presented. Mall goers will have the opportunity to vote throughout the week for their favorite vehicle.

A Racers Night Out is being planned on Friday, February 14 at a yet to be determined location.

“We feel this has the makings of a something that can only grow and get better. We are appreciative to the Laurel Mall for giving us this opportunity. It’s amazing the number of calls we’ve gotten by racers to be part of the show just by word of mouth,” said Oberto.

Cars entered in the show will take up the common area of the Mall and space is expected to fill up quickly. Registration will be on a first come first serve basis.
