The first annual NEPA Race Car Show, which takes place at the Laurel Mall in West Hazleton, February 9-15, is taking shape and in a hurry too as nearly every spot allotted is taken.

“The response has been amazing,” said event organizer Dino Oberto. “Our goal was to bring in every type of race car that competes throughout northeast Pennsylvania and we’re making that happen. It’s going to be exciting to see such a neat array of racing vehicles fill the Laurel Mall unlike any other show of this sort in the past.”

Representation will be coming from SCCA, drag racing, dirt and paved short ovals, vintage as well as a nice group of ¼-midgets.

Race tracks that will have a presence include Pocono Raceway, Numidia Dragway, Selinsgrove Speedway, JeffreyHogueRealtor.com Action Track USA, Weatherly Hillclimb, Syndersville Speedway, Evergreen Raceway Park, Mahoning Valley Speedway and Greenwood Valley Action Track with more expected.

Cars will be brought into the mall on Sunday, February 9 starting at 5:00 p.m. Throughout the week long affair drivers will be on hand to meet and greet with mall-goers.

Saturday, February 15, will be a full day of activity. Driver interviews will take place at center court near JC Penny starting at 1:00 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come out and meet all the drivers for photos and autographs. Race organizers will also be on hand to promote their respective events for the upcoming 2014 race season.

A Best Appearing Car award will be handed out to one lucky entrant. Judging will be done by an independent reviewer.

Tracy Berger-Carmen who recently authored the book, “Images of Sports: Nazareth Speedway” will be signing copies of her excellent publication that chronicle’s the history of the former iconic Lehigh Valley race track, during Saturday’s activities. It’s a must read for those who recall both the ½-mile and mile tracks that helped lead northeast racing into the forefront of the region’s sports activities.

On Friday evening, February 14, a Racers Night Out will be held at the Red Buzzard Pub which is located at 28th Street and PA Route 940 in Harleigh.

“We really want to make an impact with this show and when the line-up is set for display I think everyone will be impressed,” said Oberto.

“This is something that has the potential to grow and that is our main focus.”

The Laurel Mall is located at 106 Laurel Mall Rd, West Hazleton, 18202 just off PA Route 93. It is one mile east of exit 145 off I-81.
