One of the nation’s most time-honored racing organizations, the Checkered Flag Fan Club (CFFC), held its 62nd annual awards banquet on Saturday evening, February 1 at the Kutztown Fire Hall in Kutztown and while many regional champions and special guests were in attendance, representatives from Lehighton’s Mahoning Valley Speedway once again showed great support to the club with a solid group on hand.

Mahoning champions who received handsome trophies in recognition of their 2013 titles included Late Model ace Earl Paules Jr., Dirt Mod champion Jeff Parker, Pro 4 title winner Kyle Strohl, Corey Edelman who was the inaugural Hobby Stock champ and Micro Stock kingpin Bob Wagner.

Paules and Wagner will also be representing Mahoning Valley this coming weekend at the “Battle of Trenton” indoor races Feb.7-9 at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, NJ. Paules will be piloting the Mike Roselli Sr., No. 8 TQ Midget on Friday and Saturday while Wagner will be one of the heavy pre-race favorites for the Micro Stock event on Sunday afternoon.

Kris Graver, who was the 2013 Modified Rookie of the Year at Mahoning Valley, was named as the CFFC Rookie of the Year as well in the “Stock Car” category. Last year that same distinction went to Strohl.

The Mahoning presence was also prevalent in other individuals at the CFFC gala.

Mahoning Valley Speedway Chief Starter Bob Stull, who is the Vice President of CFFC, served as Master of Ceremony.

Dillon Kibler, who is the son of Pro 4 standout Jake Kibler along with Roger Snyder, a Mahoning track official, took top honors from the Orville Kart Club as champions in the Briggs Junior and Micro Stock classes respectively.

Sister and brother racers Taylor and Gavin Santee, whose father is Mahoning Valley Race Director Tim Santee, collected championship hardware as karting titlists from Syndersville Speedway.

All of the aforementioned drivers have Mahoning track experience and will be seen more in action on a regular basis in 2014.

Two deserving individuals with Mahoning deep ties, Rich and Judy Pursell, were named the recipients of the prestigious Bob and Ann Pouleson Award, founders of the CFFC, in recognition of their work with the Blue Mountain Quarter Midget Club in Breinigsville. Rich is a former Mahoning racer. He and Judy can be seen each Saturday night spectating from the grandstands. Friday nights at Blue Mountain they continue to help nurture the future of racing. Many former Blue Mountain competitors have made the transition to stock car racers at nearby Mahoning Valley.

Mahoning promoter Floyd Santee has inked not one but two CFFC nights this season when club representatives will be at the track to solicit new members and renew current ones. May 3 and August 9 are those dates.
