The 1st Annual NEPA Race Car Show is set and ready to roll at The Laurel Mall in West Hazleton the week of February 10-15.

Although the winter of 2014 continues to hit hard in northeast Pennsylvania, many race fans can take solace as a great display of craftsmanship will be on display in the form of impressive race cars that will fill virtually every isle way throughout the spacious Hazleton area shopping mall.

Northeast Pennsylvania has a long and storied history of auto racing and the NEPA Race Car Show will bring together a vast array of talented race drivers and their machines that compete in various classes and series throughout the region.

Event organizer Dino Oberto, in cooperation with the staff and management of the Laurel Mall, have combined forces to present what they feel will be one of the biggest events on the mall calendar. There will be race cars along every storefront with well over 40 racers committed to the show.

Evergreen Raceway Park (formerly Mountain Speedway), will be making a big splash at the show as general manager Harry Buchman will be greeting new and old fans of the 1/3-mile paved St. Johns oval. Included in the Evergreen contingent will be track champions Travis Fisher, Steve Shultz and Scott Adams. Fisher and Shultz will be unveiling new Late Models while multi-talented Adams will have his sharp looking No. 68 Modified on hand.

From Lehighton’s Mahoning Valley Speedway comes one of eastern Pennsylvania’s leading feature winners, Earl Paules Jr., who will have his title winning Late Model and Modified cars in the show. Paules will be racing at TQ Midget indoors in Trenton, NJ this weekend prior to his Laurel Mall appearance.

Road racers from the Northeastern Pennsylvania SCCA will be led by White Haven’s Sam Ryan and Freeland’s Hugh Maloney. Both are veteran wheel-twisters who travel extensively across the US with ongoing success in open-cockpit formula style racing.

The Weatherly Hillclimb Association, which plays host to the popular Weatherly Hillclimb and is also part of the Pennsylvania Hillclimb Association that includes Giant’s Despair in Wilkes-Barre Township, will have a very respectable showing including the record-setting Subaru of Al Corazza.

Selinsgrove Speedway Sprint car standout Duane Mausteller of Elysburg will have his eye-catching winged racer in the event, a first for the Laurel Mall of a car such as his.

Fans will also see Frank Cozze’s Tobias SpeedSTR that will be outfitted with pavement tires in preparation for the “Mid-Summer Thunder! Where Dirt Stars Meet The Asphalt” show slated for Sunday, June 29 at Mahoning Valley. The Stage 1 Modifieds of Richie Smith and Tom Ring’s Brown Daub KIA Slingshot of Gavin Santee, also part of the same show, will be exhibited.

Hazleton’s Steve Fox, lead instructor for the Stock Car Racing Experience at Pocono Raceway, will have both a school car as well as his No. 3 Universe Racing Team Dodge Charger ARCA car in the mall.

Pocono Raceway’s Chevy Camaro pace car is in. Up and coming racing stars will be showcased with karts and quarter midgets and Fairway Motors of Hazle Township will be bringing in a heart-stopping Corvette Stingray.

Courtney Harrison, host of Inside Track on ABC affiliate WNEP-TV 16 Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, has been named as the official judge for the Best Appearing Car award that is sponsored by Franzosa Trucking of Hazleton. Harrison will be at the mall on Friday afternoon, February 14, to make her selection. The winner will then be announced on Saturday, February 15 which will be a full day of activity.

Driver interviews will take place at center court near JC Penny starting at 2:00 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come out and meet all the racers for photos and autographs.

At 4:30 p.m., Tracy Berger-Carmen who recently authored the book, “Images of Sports: Nazareth Speedway” will be signing copies of her excellent publication that chronicle’s the history of the former iconic Lehigh Valley race track. It’s a must read for those who recall both the ½-mile and mile tracks that helped shape northeast racing into the forefront of the region’s sports activities.

On Friday evening, February 14, a Racers Night Out will be held at the Red Buzzard Pub which is located at 28th Street and PA Route 940 in Harleigh, (behind Fairway Motors) just a few miles from the Laurel Mall. All are invited to enjoy a fun filled evening with plenty of “bench racing” to go around.

Cars will be brought into the mall on Sunday, February 9 starting at 5:00 p.m. and exit on Saturday, February 15 at 9:00 p.m.

The Laurel Mall is located at 106 Laurel Mall Rd, West Hazleton, 18202 just off PA Route 93. It is one mile east of exit 145 off I-81. For additional information and show space availability please contact Dino Oberto at 570-401-8168 or email at dlmo@ptd.net.
