The 1st annual NEPA Race Car Show at the Laurel Mall in West Hazleton is officially underway.

In the midst of yet another snow fall that hit the Hazleton area just as the cars were ready to enter the mall, race teams banned together in unison to help each other get inside safely and when all was said and done the mall was transformed into a great display of racing machines with an excellent variety of cars that competes throughout northeastern Pennsylvania.

Duane Mausteller’s Harry’s U-Pull It 360 Sprint Car that runs at Selinsgrove Speedway was the first car in. It is proudly parked in center court near JC Penney. From then on one after another trickled inward and took their assigned spots.

“I cannot say thank everyone enough who braved the weather and brought out their cars for the show,” said event organizer Dino Oberto.
“It shows the passion and pride that each and every one has in their mounts and how important it was for them to be part of the first ever NEPA Race Car Show.”

Despite a few cars that understandably could not make the tow due to the weather, over 40 vehicles of the scheduled 50 are in the show, a record number for the Laurel Mall.

Race tracks and regional organizations are well represented including the NEPA SCCA, Weatherly Hillclimb Association, Selinsgrove Speedway, Hamlin Speedway, Evergreen Raceway Park, Greenwood Valley Action Track, Mahoning Valley Speedway, Pocono Raceway, Blue Mountain Quarter Midget Club, Shellhammer’s Speedway and Fairway Motors.

The NEPA Race Car Show will run throughout the week from Monday February 9 through Saturday February 15.

Courtney Harrison, host of Inside Track on WNEP-TV 16 Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, is the official judge for the Best Appearing Car award that is sponsored by Franzosa Trucking of Hazleton. Harrison will be at the mall on Friday afternoon, February 14, to make her selection. The winner will then be announced on Saturday, February 15 which will be a full day of activity.

Driver interviews will take place at center court near JC Penny starting at 2:00 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come out and meet all the racers for photos and autographs.

At 3:30 p.m., Tracy Berger-Carmen who recently authored the book, “Images of Sports: Nazareth Speedway” will be signing copies of her book that chronicle’s the history of the former Lehigh Valley race track.

On Friday evening, February 14, a Racers Night Out will be held at the Red Buzzard Pub which is located at 28th Street and PA Route 940 in Harleigh, (behind Fairway Motors) just a few miles from the Laurel Mall.
