Experience helps Myers to navigate changing track conditions.

Competitors work all winter long to overhaul their cars, and they look to the last few pre-race practices to dial in and fine-tune their machines. But some passing rain storms put some kinks into their plans on Friday, allowing
the Bowman Gray Stadium veterans to gain an advantage by leaning on their experience.

Practice sessions on Friday were cut short, and qualifying was delayed for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series. The changing track conditions put competitors to the test, and it was Burt Myers of Walnut Cove who triumphed – qualifying on the pole for Saturday night’s
Hayes Jewelers 200.

“It was a little treacherous when we first went back out,” said Myers about track conditions after practice was resumed. “But the track came in pretty good. It’s obvious: The top three or four cars ran some really good laps.”

With years and years of Modified experience under his belt, Myers had a good foundation and was able to adapt quickly. “We used the same old car, same old setup, same everything – the main reason for today for us was to fine tune,” said Myers. “We made a mock
run on our other tires and got close, so we threw something at it and it worked.”

Myers hopes that his experience will pay off not just in qualifying but also in the race as split-second decisions and racing instincts come into play. “You want to try to keep the car in front and stay out of trouble,” said Myers. “But you can’t make a plan – you’ve just
got to wait until the green flag falls and try to go racing.”

Tim Brown of Rural Hall, who won the Hayes Jewelers 200 last season, will start on the outside front row. Jason Myers of Walnut Cove starts third, with Lee Jeffreys of Winston-Salem starting in fourth.

The top ten competitors have their positions locked in. The remaining competitors have the option of requalifying on Saturday to determine their starting spots.

Ticket gates open at 6:00 for practice. The first race starts at 8:00. For more information, visit www.bowmangrayracing.com.
