Waterford Speedbowl management announced Thursday multi-time track champion and feature winner Danny Field passed away Wednesday after a battle with cancer. Field, of Deep River, was 56.

Field competed at the Speedbowl for more than three decades enjoying a sport he was extremely passionate about. An accomplished racer, Field won three track championships in the NASCAR Mini Stock division along with numerous races behind the wheel of his familiar red #18 racecar.

“Danny was a racer that many looked up to” Speedbowl owner and promoter Terry Eames said in a statement Thursday. “He was very good at winning races, but, more importantly, he was a gentleman and a family man. The entire Speedbowl community mourns his loss”.

Field’s championship seasons at the Speedbowl came in 2005, 2006 and 2009 and he tallied 28 career victories. He spent much of his racing career at Waterford but found success nearly everywhere he ventured to race. Field was a multi-time winner and two-time track champion on the high banks of Thompson (CT) Speedway in 2008 and 2011. In 2012 Field raced primarily on the Northeast Mini Stock Tour at speedways across New England, winning the series title.

The Speedbowl will pay tribute to Field during Saturday’s racing program. Flags be lowered to half-mast and a moment of silence will precede the night’s main events. The scheduled Mini Stock race will pace the track in a missing man formation, leaving the pole position open in memory of Field and his familiar #18 car. Funeral arrangements were not yet made available.
