The 60th anniversary season at Spencer Speedway got started today under cloudy, threatening skies. The annual “Test and Tune” session saw 46 cars on the fast half mile Spencer oval. Topping the speed charts was a lap time of 20.87 seconds set by Williamson’s own, Mike Leaty.

Leaty drove his number 1 Northeast Technologies sponsored Sunoco Modified. His time was topped by an RoC Modified driven by Darryl Lewis. However Leaty remained the fastest of the regular class drivers on hand.

Two of the planned practice sessions for the six classes were able to be completed before heavy rains moved in and ended the planned four sessions practice night at the halfway mark.

“Reports kept coming in that the rain was coming quickly,” stated race director Larry Steurrys. “We wanted to give as many chances as possible to the racers, but we also wanted to be on the safe side of things. We made announcements so the fans on hand could take cover before the rains hit.”

This Friday, May 16, at 7:30, the NASCAR teams will assemble to really begin the 60th anniversary season of NASCAR racing. It will be Whelen Night at the track. On track will be the Big 10 Super Stock in a 30 Lap feature, plus Sunoco Modifieds, Super Sixes , 4 Cylinders and INEX Legends.
