After fighting wet weather for the first three weeks of the 2014 stock car racing season at Wall Stadium Speedway officials are hoping for good weather this Saturday night (May 17) when “Kids Baseball League Night” is presented. On this night, which honors youth baseball, kids arriving at the speedway wearing a league shirt or jersey will be admitted free of charge. Grandstands will open at 5:00 p.m. and qualifying is then set for 6:00 p.m. with main events for all divisions to follow.
On the speedway the Sportsman cars will be in the spotlight in a “cone race,” the first of its kind in the 64 years history of the famous third mile high banked paved oval speedway.
A “cone race” offered added excitement on every restart of an event.
A “cone race” works like this. A traffic cone is placed on the backstretch at the one-to-go sign for a restart. Any driver can choose to go inside the cone or outside the cone. If the first four drivers choose the inside, for example, the fifth place driver can choose outside and move up to the front row.
Does a driver take the preferred inside groove and restart further back on the inside, or does he or she choose the shorter line of cars on the outside and hope he or she can make it stick? That’s the issue each driver will face on each restart.
Also in action will be the Legend Cars, Factory Stocks and 4 Cylinder cars along with the first appearance of the year by the open cockpit TQ Midgets and the beautifully restored cars of the Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club. The 4 Cylinder cars will compete in two main events; one regularly schedule and one rain postponed from a few weeks ago.
Pit gates will open at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday; with practice starting at 3:00 p.m. Grandstands will open at 5:00 p.m. and qualifying is then set for 6:00 p.m. with main events for all divisions to follow.
Action will then continue on Sunday (May 18) as Wall Stadium presents the “Sunday Small-Car Series” starting at 11:00 a.m.
The Downs Ford Modifieds are set to return to action on May 24. First up at 6:00 p.m. will be the conclusion of their 40-lapper rain postponed from May 3.
Wall Stadium presents professional motorsports events on Saturdays and Sundays through September with special post-season races in October and November. The speedway is located on Route 34 in Wall Township, N.J., just one mile north of Garden State Parkway exit 98 and Interstate 195 exit 35B.
