Andrew Krause became the first ever “cone race” winner at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night. The Holmdel resident jumped to the lead early and then fought off the competition to take his first win of the young season.

Krause and Brick’s Robert Sutphin wrestled side-by-side early on before Krause finally powered to the lead in the outside lane. A lap five restart saw the top five racers choose the inside lane on the line-up while Howell’s Kevin Davison took the chance at the cone and swung to the high groove to restart on the outside of the front row. On the restart Krause maintained the lead while Davison settled into second.

A handful of restarts during the remainder of the 30-lap distance saw several competitors swap restart positions at the cone but Krause held off all challengers. Galloway’s Joey King took the chance in the outside lane on the final restart and was able to hold down second to the checker with Davison settling for third. Rob Hyer of South Amboy and Brick’s Tim Stephan were fourth and fifth.

“I think it is a good concept,” Krause said after the test. “I had to race on the outside early and got into the lead and then I was on the inside the rest of the way on restarts. My guys had this car so good that I think we would have done well in either lane.”

After several rain postponements Steve Michel of Egg Harbor City raced to victory in the 25-lap Factory Stock main after swapping the lead with former champion Scott Riggleman of Manchester. Last year’s title winner, Ronnie Mullen of Brick, was third, with Rob McCormick and Andrew Krause wrapping up the top five.

Due to a rain postponement the 4 Cylinder Stocks battled in two 25-lappers. In the first, rain postponed from May 3, James Meyers of Port Monmouth grabbed the win over Wall’s Cole Ormsbee, Mike Wahl of East Islip, N.Y., Alonzo Morales and Ron Becker. In the nightcap Ormsbee took the win over Jackson’s Mike Bilello, Wahl, Meyers and Becker.

Howell’s Robert French was the winner of the 25-lapper for the Legend Cars over Mike Alcaro, Brian Spencer of Edison, Kyle Dealaman of Warren and Flemington’s Bobby Baltera.

Joey Bailey of Helmetta grabbed his first ever win in the 25-lapper for the visiting TQ Midgets. Ryan Tidman of Levittown, Pa. and Buddy Sloed of West Chester, Pa. were second and third.

Cassandra Denis won the 15-lap “Ladies’ Race” by taking the lead on the final stretch after colliding with the guardrail and the car of Nancy Hills who finished second.

The Memorial Day weekend will see action on the track both Saturday night and Sunday afternoon (May 24 & 25). On Saturday night the Downs Ford Modifieds return to the spotlight in the final 23-laps of a rain postponed event before competing in their first ever “cone race.” Also on the 6:00 p.m. agenda will be the Limited Late Models, Legend Cars and the visiting Microstocks. Veterans and active military will be honored with free admission.

On Sunday afternoon the oval presents the Red, White and Bluedozer afternoon of thrills. A $1,500 Demolition Derby will headline the program, which will also include a Stunt Show, Quad Show, 50-lappers for the Factory Stocks and the 4 Cylinder Stocks and a Ladies’ race.
