Chris Fleming of Mount Airy has had to struggle through a winless drought the last two years at Bowman Gray Stadium. But when it starts to rain in Victory Lane, it pours.

After breaking his bad luck streak with a win just two weeks ago, Fleming grabbed the checkered flag again on Saturday in the Kevin Powell Motorsports 100 for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series.

“I got knocked out of two wins the year before last. Sometimes when you get knocked down, you can’t get back up,” said Fleming. “This time, I was confident that I could win.”

Lee Jeffreys of Winston-Salem started out the night on a strong note, turning in the fastest qualifying lap for the Modifieds. When competitors drew for starting position, Jeffreys drew the pole as his start in a stroke of good luck. Tony Black of Lexington started on the outside front row.

Jeffreys secured the lead when the green flag waved, but Black took to the outside during the first restart to challenge Jeffreys again. As the two fought for position, they collided – sending Black careening into the guard rail as a sizeable pileup ensued behind him.

Kyle Ebersole of Hummelstown, PA and Brandon Ward of Winston-Salem also tried their hand at outside-row battles with Lee Jeffreys during restarts. Jeffreys held strong until lap 66 when Fleming – who had started sixth – took to the outside and passed Jeffreys for the lead.

“Lee and I always race great together. I come here to put on a show for my fans - and if the outside’s open, I’m going to go,” said Fleming.

Fleming sailed ahead at the front seeming hard to beat – but coming up behind him was Defending Champion Burt Myers of Walnut Cove. The #1 car of Myers attempted to pass Fleming on the outside during a restart, but Myers was unable to make good.

The champion then began to stalk Fleming, waiting on his opportunity to pounce. Unfortunately without a great deal of cautions, Myers’s chances were ticking by. He gave several stout taps to the rear bumper of Fleming, and the two banged fenders more than once.

Fans stood on their feet to see if Myers would be able to shake Fleming during the last few laps, but the #13 of Fleming held strong. “He banged on me one time, and I gave him the outside,” said Fleming. “I’m sure it was a good race for the fans, and that’s what we’re here for.”

Myers wasn’t pleased with the way Fleming raced him. “I put a little pressure on the 13. I didn’t try to wreck him – just tried to wiggle him enough to put a move on him. And then when I did, he pretty much carried me out to the guard rail,” said Myers. “It’s not what I wanted, but in the grand scheme of things we’ll take second place.”

Kyle Ebersole finished in third with Lee Jeffreys coming in fourth.

John Smith of Mount Airy initially finished fifth but was disqualified by NASCAR Officials for illegally altering his tires. Officials stated that more penalties for Smith may be forthcoming later in the week.

In the Double D Construction Services Sportsman Series, Wayne Hill of Winston-Salem took the checkered in the first 20-lapper, with Justin Taylor of King and Taylor Branch of Lewisville finishing second and third. Michael Tilley of Winston-Salem won the second race, with Michael Adams of Yadkinville coming in second and Ryan Robertson of Winston-Salem taking third.

Saturday was the annual 50-lapper for the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series – their longest and most prestigious race of the season. After qualifying 14th, John McNeal of Winston-Salem flew to the front to take the checkered. Steven Berrier of Germanton finished behind him in second, with Chase Hunt of Lexington taking third.

In the Traffic Control Safety Services Stadium Stock Series, Chris Allison of Mocksville grabbed the win in the first 15-lapper. Veteran A.J. Sanders of Mocksville won the second.
