Defending Champion Burt Myers of Walnut Cove looks to be the man to beat again in 2014. But sometimes being out front has its disadvantages.

As a handicapping system, competitors in the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series take their qualifying lap in order of their points standings. Myers, who currently leads the points, has the distinction of going out first.

With other Stadium divisions practicing throughout the evening, the track rubber on the track doesn’t react well with the tire compound on the Modifieds. It takes a few good laps for the racing surface to be at its prime, and the top
competitors on the points ladder are qualifying before the track gets there.

In last event, Myers qualified 10th fastest. Tim Brown of Tobaccoville, who entered the event tied with Myers for the points lead, qualified in third. Jason Myers of Walnut Cove – ranked third in the points – turned the eighth fastest time.

Starting lineup was then decided in last event by random draw, putting Burt Myers in eighth. Tim Brown and Jason Myers didn’t fare as well: Brown drew 22nd with Jason Myers drawing 27th – the very rear of the field – as his start.

Brown climbed his way forward, finishing fifth. Jason Myers made the best of his situation and moved up to a 10th place finish. Burt Myers’s second place finish boosts him into a solid points lead.

But the starting lineup may not be so kind to Myers this Saturday: the scheduled twin 25-lap races have their starting lineups decided strictly by qualifying. Burt Myers will be put to the test as he qualifies first – and with only 25 laps to make
a move, it will be difficult to come back from a poor qualifying performance.

And to add to the pressure, this Saturday will be a Double Points Night, where twice the normal amount of points are at stake.

That tension will certainly be felt in the Double D Construction Services Sportsman Series. Saturday is the annual Whelen Sportsman 100 – the longest and most prestigious race of the season for the Sportsman cars. The 100-lapper is known
for putting competitors to the test.

Points leader Derek Stoltz of Walkertown hopes to be up to the challenge. He grabbed the checkered in the 100-lapper in 2012 and is no stranger to fighting his way through the field.

Stoltz had his hands full in last event as he suffered from a flat tire in the first race which relegated him to a 15th place finish. But in the second race Stoltz charged forward to take sixth, keeping him in the points lead. Ryan Robertson of
Winston-Salem finished eighth and third to gain some ground on Stoltz. Robertson is just one point behind in second.

In the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series, Brian Wall of Winston-Salem finished seventh to keep his points lead. David Sumner of Trinity’s second place finish rockets him up to a second place ranking.

A.J. Sanders of Mocksville hopes he can continue his perfect season in the Traffic Control Safety Services Stadium Stock Series. In two races, Sanders has racked up two victories – giving him a solid points lead.

The points ladders may be in for some rearranging this Saturday with Double Points Night and the Whelen Sportsman 100. Also on the schedule are twin 25s for the Modifieds plus racing for the Street Stock and Stadium Stock divisions.

Gates open at 6:00 for practice, qualifying for the Sportsman begins at 6:00, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by
