With wet weather effecting four of the first five Saturday night events at Wall Stadium Speedway this 2014 season, racing officials will attempt to get a complete card of stock car racing at the shore speedway this Saturday night (May 31). Heading the card will be the Downs Ford Modified stock cars in the final 23 laps of a rain postponed 40-lapper from May 3 and a 40-lap “Cone Race” that was originally on the schedule for last Saturday night’s card that was rained out.

On Saturday night, officially known as “Teen Night,” grandstand seating will open at 5:00 p.m. with racing starting at 6:00 p.m. Teens who present school identification will enjoy a discounted admission price.

First up at 6:00 p.m. the Downs Ford Modifieds will compete in the final 23 circuits of a 40-lapper rain postponed from May 3. Due to the rainy weather, that will be the first Modified main event to be completed this season. Once that race is complete the Modifieds will then prepare for their first ever 40-lap “Cone Race” to be contested later in the evening.

A “cone race” offers added excitement on every restart of an event.

Here’s how a “cone race” works. A traffic cone is placed on the backstretch at the one-to-go sign for a restart. Any driver can choose to go inside the cone or outside the cone. If the first four drivers choose the inside, for example, the fifth place driver can choose outside and move up to the front row.

Does a driver take the preferred inside groove and restart further back on the inside, or does he or she choose the shorter line of cars on the outside and hope he or she can make it stick? That’s the issue each driver will face on each restart.

Also in action on Saturday night will be the Legend Cars in Twin 25 lap main events, Sportsman racers in a 30-lap feature, Limited Late Models in a 25-lapper and the Factory Stocks in a 25-lap nightcap.

Pit gates will open at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday; with practice starting at 3:00 p.m. Grandstands will open at 5:00 p.m. and the first Modified main is then set for 6:00 p.m. with regularly scheduled qualifying and main events for all divisions to follow.
