We told Mother Nature she wasn’t invited and she listened! Under beautiful racing conditions Chemung Speedrome welcomed the Big 10 Super Stocks along with their regular divisions. Winners Friday night included Mike Nichols (Super Stocks), Brandon DeBrakeleer (INEX Legends), Joe Lane (4 Cylinders) and Nick Morich (Bandoleros). The Sunoco Modifieds fell victim to the track curfew and a safety concern.

The Big 10 Super Stock Series kicked off their 2014 schedule with a 35-lap feature at the Speedrome. The 20-car field competed in 3 heat races, won by Joe Mancuso, Mike Nichols and Jeff Goodwin. The top 4 finishers from those heats drew starting positions 1-12 and it was Lee Sharpsteen who drew #1 while Jake Snell drew #2.

The race was plagued with cautions, the first of which came on the opening lap. Joe Fetzer, Dusty Snell, Nick Robinson and Jody Buckley got together in turn 1. Buckley’s tire got ripped off by Fetzer and he was done for the night. Lee Sharpsteen held off Snell on the restart while Mike Nichols got around Jeff Goodwin to chase the leader.

Track officials brought out a safety caution with 7 laps completed due to a hole that developed between turns 3 and 4. That issue would come into play again later in the evening.

Over the next 10 laps Nichols tried repeatedly to overtake Sharpsteen, whose car was glued to the inside and strong off the corners. Just short of the halfway mark Jake Snell spun in turn 2 but the 71of Tim Gullo slowed when he broke a center link. He had been running 6th at the time.

Two more cautions, for single cars spins, brought Nichols alongside Sharpsteen for the restarts. Each time the powerful #8 prevailed and, with 12 laps remaining he had built up a comfortable margin over Nichols, Goodwin and Nick Shaw.

A restart with 6 to go had Joe Mancuso and Jake Lyon in row 3. Again Sharpsteen prevailed and was 2 laps away from a likely win. Mancuso made a charge and got around Shaw, Goodwin and Nichols. As he and Sharpsteen entered turn 3 Mancuso clipped Sharpsteen’s left rear fender and both spun. That gave the lead to Nichols, who had Goodwin next to him for the 2-lap dash. Nichols held his line and won the event for the 2nd year in a row. Goodwin, Dan Mathews, Fetzer and Jake Snell all finished in the top 5.

The Big 10 Super Stocks will make a 2nd appearance at the ‘Drome on August 22nd.

By virtue of their respective heat race wins, Brandon DeBrakeleer and Christian Eckes started on the front row for the 20-lap INEX Legends feature. DeBrakeleer took the lead but lost that spot to point leader Alexandria Smith on the 2nd lap. She, then, forfeited the lead to Eckes, who held it for the lion’s share of the race. His lead grew while Smith and DeBrakeleer waged a great battle for 2nd place. It appeared that this one would go caution-free until Josh Marchese and Alex Bowen got together on the front stretch with 18 laps completed. DeBrakeleer wasn’t to be denied this one, as he led the field off turn 2 and down the back stretch, keeping the others behind him over the final 2 laps. It was sweep time for DeBrakeleer, who finished ahead of Eckes, Smith, Chuck Lohmeyer and Gary Ham.

Heat winners Joe Lane and Cricket Clonch made up row 1 for the 20-lap 4 Cylinder feature. Lane took command and had built up a nice lead over Clonch, Cody Jackson and Nick Morich, who were locked in a great battle for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. The first of 2 cautions came when Jackson and Clonch spun after contact between turns 3 and 4. Gone was Lane’s lead and Morich restarted alongside him. Morich powered his way around on the outside to take the lead but Lane was right behind him in basically a 2-man race. Clonch’s flat tire brought out the final caution, which set up a green/white/checkered finish. Lane made a beautiful move in turn 2 and ducked underneath Morich to reclaim the lead. He held on for his 2nd consecutive win, followed to the line by Morich, Sam Warren, Jackson and Monica Green.

You have to go back to the 2012 season to find any Bandolero winner other than David French. Nick Morich put an end to his incredible win streak Friday night. Starting beside each other on the front row, Morich proved early on that he was the one to beat. The 8-lap race was slowed by 4 cautions, but on each restart Morich took command and claimed the trophy for a job well done. French, who won the Bandolero heat race, finished 2nd, with an impressive Lars McElravy 3rd. Teddy Bowen and Damon Frutchey rounded out the top 5.

Qualifying for the Sunoco Modified division resulted in heat race wins for TJ Potrzebowski and Jimmy Zacharias. Last on the evening’s agenda, their 40-lap feature had to be postponed for two reasons. First, the full program bumped the start of their race right up to the strict curfew. Second, the track had broken up between turns 3 and 4, right in one of the main racing grooves. The track crew had worked on it but it was determined that it presented a safety hazard and no further racing could have continued even if the curfew issue had not been a factor. The lineup is set for the race, which will be run first this coming Friday night. Potrzebowski and Zacharias will make up the front row, with Jody Buckley and Zack Curren starting right behind them.

This Friday’s program will begin with the held-over Sunoco Modified 40-lap feature from May 30th. That will be followed by qualifying and features for the Sunoco Modifieds (40), Super Stocks (25), 4 Cylinders (20), INEX Legends (twin-15’s), Bandoleros (8), and race #2 for the Dirt Crate Sportsman division. Pits open at 4, practice and grandstand open at 6, and racing gets underway at 7:15 PM. Admission: adults $12; seniors 65 and older $10; kids 6-12 $5; kids 5 and under free. Fans are reminded that their ticket stub from May 30th is good for $2 off this Friday night.

Notes: John Zack was the Veteran of the Race for his service in the Air Force. John Bacon, owner of Chemung Soft Water, sponsored the trophies, and had a group in one of the suites for the night. Randy Davenport presented an additional $100 to Nichols, in memory of the late Gail Clark. Clark, the noted engine builder, was all about winning.
