After suffering through mechanical difficulties and official calls that upset him so much that he parked his car early this season, Steven Reed turned his year around Saturday night by winning the 40-lap Downs Ford Modified stock car feature race on NAPA Night at Wall Stadium Speedway. It was the first win of the year for the Jackson based young veteran driver.

Second-generation driver Glenn Slocum, Jr. of Navesink rocketed to the lead at the outset but Reed was right on his bumper. Reed sized up his foe for nine laps before diving to the inside lane on the backstretch to take the lead. A handful of cautions slowed the action but Reed was able to maintain his advantage even though Trevor Alspach of Willingboro, who had won his first Modified main event a week earlier, throttled into second.

Reed was able to hold his ground to take the breakthrough win, while Alspach was the runner-up. Andrew Krause of Holmdel was third at the stripe, with Howell’s Eric Mauriello and Shaun Carrig of Little Falls wrapping up the top five.

“It has been real disappointing the way the season has gone so far,” Reed said after the win. “It has been a struggle. I have to thank my father for the help on this Father’s Day weekend. He has stuck with me all the way.”

Holmdel’s Krause was the winner of the companion 30-lapper for the Sportsman cars taking the lead on the 11th lap with a daring outside lane pass of early lead Matt Langbein of Lawrence Harbor. Krause then fought off Kenny Van Wickle of Manasquan before Brick’s Robert Sutphin slipped into second during the closing laps. Van Wickle held down third, while Howell’s Chris Lane and Ken Matlach of New Hyde Park, N.Y. completed the top five.

The 4 Cylinder Stocks were in the spotlight on NAPA Night with two main events. In the first 25-lapper Cole Ormsbee of Wall fought off James Meyers of Port Monmouth for the win over Alonzo Morales, Mike Wahl of East Islip, N.Y. and Ron Becker of Howell. In the nightcap Meyers came back for the win with Morales, Wahl, Ormsbee and Brick’s Randy Hart wrapping up the top five.

Brick’s Ronnie Mullen fought with Wall’s Tim O’Shea in the early going before taking the lead on lap 14 and then winning the 25-lapper for the Factory Stocks. Former Champ Scott Riggleman of Manchester nailed down second, with Tiffany Olejnik of Wall, O’Shea and Joey Helberg of Union filling out the top five.

Vinny Troia won his first ever Legend Cars 25-lap main event Saturday night after wrestling with Edison’s Brian Spencer. Robert French of Howell came back from an early race tangle for third, with Dan Roslin of Little Egg Harbor fourth and Louie Keraitis fifth.

The stock cars will then take June 21 off as the touring Formula Drift competitors take over the speedway for the only time all year. The Downs Ford Modifieds will then return on June 28 with the annual running of the rich and prestigious “Garden State Classic,” a 125-lap test offering $3,000 to the winner. Lap sponsorships for the event, in increments of $25, $50 and $100 with all of the money collected going to the racers, are available now at the speedway office. The Sportsman races, Limited Late Models, 4 Cylinder Stocks and the restored racecars of the Garden Stock Vintage Stock Car Club will also be on the agenda.

Pit area parking opens at 1:00 p.m. on June 28 with practice set for 3:00 p.m. Grandstand seating opens at 5:00 p.m., qualifying is set for 5:30 p.m. with main events to follow.

Wall Stadium presents professional motorsports events on Saturdays and Sundays through September with special post-season races in October and November. The speedway is located on Route 34 in Wall Township, N.J., just one mile north of Garden State Parkway exit 98 and Interstate 195 exit 35B. The speedway hotline number is 732-681-6400, while CKMotorsports@aol.com is the track’s email address. More information is also available at www.wallspeedwayracing.com.
