Mid-Summer Thunder Nears

Mahoning Valley Speedway Modified racers have a chance to pocket a nice sum of cash this coming Saturday evening, June 21 as twin 50 lap features, paying $2000 to win each, will highlight the night of stock car racing at the paved Lehighton ¼-mile oval.

It’s possible that one driver can ultimately win both events and walk off with $4000 for the night, although considering the caliber of the competition, the odds are tough.

Eric Beers comes into the night as the point leader and a two time winner in 2014. With back-to-back runner ups Earl Paules has been pounding down the door for his first win in a Modified. Last weekend veteran John Markovic notched his second win.

Nevin George and Kyle Strohl also have two wins each. Don Wagner has likewise tasted victory. And while there will be the likely suspects for winning, rest assured that Mahoning is the place to expect the unexpected thanks to its always tight-packed action where virtually everyone is equally matched.

Also on the schedule of events are the Late Models, Street Stocks, Dirt Mods, Pro 4s and Hobby Stocks. Plus there is going to be a Kids Banner Contest taking place.

Racing gets underway at 6:00pm. Pit gates open at noon. There will be early paid practice from 1:00 to 3:00. Regular warm-ups will be held from 4:00 – 5:00. Adult general admission is $20. $2.00 off for students, seniors 65 + and active military, must have ID. Children 10 and under are free.

A double weekend of racing takes place on June 28-29. Saturday evening will be a regular six division show of stock car races.

On Sunday, June 29 “The Mid-Summer Thunder! Where Dirt Stars Meet The Asphalt” will feature the first ever appearance at Mahoning Valley for the Sunoco USAC Championship SpeedSTRs along with the National Slingshot All Star Tour and Junior National Slingshot Tour. Also competing that day will be the Stage One Modifieds, Micro Stock Racing Series, World Formula Micro Stocks, Champ Karts, Junior Sportsman Champ Karts and the Vintage Division of the ATQMRA. Sunday’s races start at 4:00 pm.

The SpeedSTRs and Slingshots race each Wednesday night at the Action Track in Kutztown and when they come to Mahoning there will be a star-studded field including some of the most prominent names in regional dirt track racing as well as some very well to do pavement drivers. The entry list will be released shortly.

Courtney Harrison, host of Inside Track on WNEP-TV 16, the ABC affiliate in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, has been named Grand Marshall of the event. Keith Gerhart will sing the National Anthem and popular race caller Barry Angstast will join regular Mahoning announcers Dino and Mario Oberto in the booth.

Mahoning Valley Speedway is located on PA route 443, two miles west of Lehighton. Additional info can be found on the track’s website at www.mahoningvalley-speedway.com Also on Facebook at Mahoning Valley Speedway.
