Tim Brown of Tobaccoville has grown accustomed to success at Bowman Gray Stadium, but success has been elusive for Brown in 2014.

For the last 21 years – since 1993 – Brown has visited Winner’s Circle at least once. He’s racked up 70 wins, putting him second on the all-time Modified win list – just three victories under Junior Miller. And as a testament to his consistency, Brown has claimed the championship in the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series a record nine times.

But almost halfway through the 2014 season, Brown has yet to enter Winner’s Circle. He came close on Saturday by qualifying on the pole and leading 19 laps before being overtaken by Jason Myers of Walnut Cove. The #83 finished in second, giving him four second-place finishes out of 11 races.

“The motor cut off on the restart and gave Jason the race. It’s the way my year’s been going,” said Brown. “We’ve been struggling a little bit and haven’t even won a race this year.”

“That 4 and 1 [of Jason Myers and Burt Myers] have been crazy fast, so we’re just digging trying to get better” said Brown. “The thing is you just have to keep your head down, keep digging, keep focused, and keep working on your
car.”

Despite his winless streak, Brown has managed to turn in some consistent performances – giving him a current ranking of second in the Modified points standings. His second place finish on Saturday slightly narrowed the gap that separates him from points leader Burt Myers of Walnut Cove. But with involvement in a few wrecks throughout the season, Brown is still 30 points behind.

In the Double D Construction Services Sportsman Series, Ryan Robertson of Winston-Salem had an unfortunate end to the first race as mechanical problems forced him to pit. But a lucky “Madhouse Scramble” draw sent him to the front for the start of the second race, and Robertson leaped on the opportunity and took the win.

Robertson adds slightly to his points lead, with Taylor Branch of Lewisville close behind in second.

David Sumner of Trinity was the points leader in the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series entering last event – but a collision early in the race relegated him to a 16th place finish. Sumner drops out of the points lead down to second. John McNeal of Winston-Salem finished seventh, boosting him up into the points lead to take Sumner’s place.

In the Traffic Control Safety Services Stadium Stock Series, another points leader encounters misfortune. Daniel Yates of Lexington was leading the race, a few laps away from taking his third victory and a stronger points lead. But carburetor issues sent him sputtering into the pits and took him to third on the points ladder.

Chris Allison of Mocksville moves into the points lead, with Defending Champion Chuck Wall of Lexington moving up to second.

The racing action continues this Saturday night with twin 25-lap races for the Modifieds, plus racing for the Sportsman, Street Stock, and Stadium Stock Divisions. And the night will end with another wild and crazy 109 U-Pull-It Skid Race.

Gates open at 6:00 for practice, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night. Directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
