Dowling, Peterson, Menditto, Bessette, & Walker Score Town Fair Tire 80 Feature Wins At Stafford Motor Speedway
Stafford Speedway returned to NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing action with the Valenti Modified Racing Series in the house for the 2nd Annual Town Fair Tire 80. Taking down weekly feature wins on the night were Chase Dowling, who scored his first career SK Modified® victory in the Xtra Mart Xtra D 45-lap SK Modified® feature, Jim Peterson in the 30-lap Late Model feature, Dylan Menditto, who was also a first time winner, in the 20-lap SK Light Modified feature, Austin Bessette in the 20-lap Limited Late Model feature, and Johnny Walker picked up his second consecutive victory in the Xtra Mart Xtra D 20-lap DARE Stock feature. The SK Modifieds® and DARE Stocks were partaking in their Xtra Mart Xtra D feature events, with Xtra Mart Convenience Stores providing a $1,500 bonus that was split among the top-5 finishers and they provided a $250 bonus for the DARE Stocks that was split among the top-5 finishers.
In the 45-lap SK Modified® Xtra Mart Xtra D feature event, Michael Gervais, Jr. and Ronnie Williams were locked in a side by side duel for the lead from the drop of the green, but before the first lap could be completed, there was a multi-car incident behind the leaders that involved Nick Boivin, Dave Salzarulo, Jay Sundeen, Tom Bolles, Troy Talman, and Rowan Pennink that brought the caution out.
Gervais took the lead with Williams slotting into second behind him. Sean Foster was third, with Todd Owen and Dan Avery side by side for fourth place right behind him. Avery moved ahead of Owen and he was now on the outside of Foster to challenge for third. With 5 laps complete, Foster spun coming out of turn 4, which collected the car of Matt Galko and brought the caution out.
Gervais took the lead on the restart with Avery moving up to second. Chase Dowling was now side by side with Williams for third place with Doug Coby in fifth. Right behind Coby was Ted Christopher, who was just in front of Woody Pitkat and Todd Owen. Rowan Pennink brought the caution out with 12 laps complete as his car came to a stop at eth exit of turn 2.
Gervais took the lead after a lap of side by side racing with Avery and Dowling was able to pull alongside Avery in a fight for second. Dowling took the position on lap-15 and on lap-17, Coby moved by Williams to move into fourth place. Gervais spun in turn 4 to bring the caution out with 17 laps complete. Gervais’ spin put Dowling into the lead with Avery to his outside for the restart.
Dowling took the lead with Coby pulling alongside Avery for second. Coby took the spot one lap after the restart and now Pitkat was was on the inside of Avery and he took third to drop Avery back to fourth. Ryan Preece was challenging for fifth but he spun into the frontstretch infield with 20 laps complete to bring the caution out.
Dowling took the lead back under green with Pitkat getting by Coby for second. With Coby stuck on the high side, Avery was able to take over third and Coby fell from second back to fourth. Christopher was locked in a side by side fight with Williams for fifth and Williams did a half spin in turn 2 on lap-25 but he was able to keep going and brought his car to pit road with sparks showering from the left side of his car.
Pitkat was beginning to apply heavy pressure to the back bumper of Dowling, but the caution came back out with 28 laps complete for Kurt Lenahan and Sundeen, who spun in turn 4.
Dowling took the lead again back under green with Avery moving back up to second. Pitkat was third, with Coby in fourth and Christopher was side by side with Keith Rocco for fifth place. Right behind Christopher and Rocco was Eric Berndt and Todd Owen.
Avery looked to make a move on Dowling for the lead, but Dowling was able to stay out front with 10 laps to go. Avery backed off for a lap before again applying pressure for the lead. With 6 laps to go, Avery was right back on Dowling’s bumper. Tommy Membrino, Jr. came to a stop in the middle of turns 3+4 against the wall to bring the caution back out.
Dowling took the lead back under green with Pitkat moving into second. Avery was third, Coby was fourth, and Berndt was fifth but the action was slowed again as Williams spun in the middle of turns 1+2 with 41 laps complete.
Dowling again took the lead while Pitkat was able to slot into second right behind him. Avery and Coby were side by side for third place with Berndt and Christopher side by side for fifth. Dowling was able to hold off the hard challenge of Pitkat to capture his first career SK Modified® victory. Avery finished third, with Coby and Berndt rounding out the top-5.
In the 30-lap Late Model feature event, the race took the green with a multicar melee in turn 1 that collected the cars of Skip Breunig, Jim Mavlouganes, and Kevin Gambacorta to bring the caution out.
Dennis Botticello took the lead on the restart and immediately began to pull away from Jim Peterson in second. But the caution came out with 2 laps complete to erase Botticello’s lead as Josh Wood and Mark Heim got together and spun in turn 4.
Back under green, Peterson worked his way around Botticello in turns 3+4 to take over the race lead. J.J. Hill was third, Michael Bennett was fourth, and Cory Casagrande was up to fifth. Just as Botticello had opened up a large lead, Peterson was beginning to do the same but the caution came out with 5 laps complete for Mark Heim, who spun in the middle of turns 1+2.
Peterson took the lead ahead of Botticello on the restart, but behind them, Hill got into the wall and limped his way back to pit road. This moved Adam Gray up to third, with Cory Casagrande and Jay Stuart making up the top-5. Peterson was again beginning to stretch out his advantage over Botticello and just as Gray and Casagrande made a move to get past Botticello, the caution came out for a spin by Heim in turn 4.
Peterson continued to lead the race on the restart and Gray made a quick move to get past Botticello for second. Stuart followed suit and moved up to third. Botticello continued to slide backwards as Casagrande, Mavlouganes, and Breunig all were able to get by, dropping Botticello back to seventh. The caution came back out for spins by Breunig and Scott Cook with 14 laps complete.
Peterson took the lead back under green with Gray quickly slotting into second. Stuart was third, with Mavlouganes and Mike Quintiliano right behind him. Casagrande was sixth with Bennett, Michael Scorzelli, Gambacorta, and Botticello rounding out the top-10. Gray was able to stay within a car length of Peterson and with 10 laps to go the top-3 cars were all within a car length of each other with Mavlouganes lurking behind Stuart in fourth. Heim spun for a fourth time in turn 4 to bring the caution out with 26 laps complete.
Peterson took the lead on the restart while Stuart was able to pull alongside Gray in a fight for second. Stuart took the spot from Gray one lap after the restart and Mavlouganes was following in Stuart’s tracks to get by Gray. Gray got loose in turns 3+4 and slid back several spots to sixth.
Peterson led Stuart back to the checkered flag to pick up his first Late Model win of the 2014 season. Mavlouganes finished third, with Casagrande and Gambacorta rounding out the top-5.
In the 20-lap SK Light Modified feature event, Dylan Menditto got a good run to the outside of Todd Douillard to move into the race lead at the drop of the green. Geoff Boisjolie followed Menditto’s lead and also was able to take to the high groove to get past Douillard. The third lap saw Jay Goff, Branden Dion, Tyler Hines, D.J. Burnham, and Paul French all get by Douillard as he was fading backwards fast. On lap-5, Menditto, Boisjolie, and Goff were in a 3-car train for the lead an advantage of several car lengths back to Dion in fourth place.
At the halfway point of the race, Menditto continued to hold the lead with Boisjolie and Goff behind him. Hines was fourth and Burnham got around Dion to move into fifth place. On lap-16, Boisjolie got out of shape coming out of turn 2 and he slid from second back to sixth place. Boisjolie’s misfortune opened up Menditto’s advantage over Goff to a comfortable margin of half a straightaway.
Menditto led Goff back to the checkered flag to pick up his first career SK Light victory. Goff finished second, with Burnham edging out Hines for third and Dion beat Jeremy Sorel to the checkered flag to round out the top-5.
In the 20-lap Limited Late Model feature event, Glenn Bartkowski charged into the race lead from the pole, but Austin Bessette got a great run down the backstretch and he passed Bartkowski going into turn 3 to move to the front. David Arute was third with Duane Provost fourth and Jesse Hinze fifth. Norm Sears was right behind Hinze in sixth, with Albert Saunders, Andrew Hayes, Cliff Saunders, and Justin Bren making up the top-10.
On lap-4, Provost made a move around Arute to move into third and Hinze, Sears, Albert Saunders, and Hayes all followed suit as Arute was stuck in the high groove and he fell back to 8th. Bessette was pulling away from Bartkowski, Provost, and Hinze and he had nearly a full straightaway lead at the halfway point of the race.
Provost was able to work his way around Bartkowski to move into second but Bessette still had a large lead with 7 laps to go. Bartkowski was now running third with Hinze and Hayes behind him. Sears was all by himself in sixth with Arute locked in a 3-way battle with Bren and Albert Saunders for seventh place.
Bessette cruised to the checkered flag to pick up his first win of the 2014 season in dominating fashion. Provost finished second with Bartkowski, Hayes, and Hinze rounding out the top-5.
