Lehighton’s Mahoning Valley Speedway will be plenty busy this coming Saturday and Sunday, June 28-29 as the paved quarter mile oval will have race cars circling around throughout the weekend.

Saturday night at 6:00 pm will be a full card of stock car racing with all six regular tracks classes running heats and features. Modifieds, Late Models, Street Stocks, Dirt Mods, Pro 4s and Hobby Stocks are set to compete.

For the first time a “cone race” will be held. The Street Stock division will be the class that partakes in the unique race that allows drives to choose which lane they wish to restart in after each caution.

Pit gates open at noon. There will be early paid practice from 1:00 to 3:00. Regular warm-ups will be held from 4:00 – 5:00. Adult general admission is $12.

On Sunday an historic event takes place when for the first time the Sunoco USAC Championship SpeedSTRs will see action at Mahoning Valley. The SpeedSTR feature will be 45 laps and pay $3000 to win.

A star-studded list of area and regional short track standouts will be in the race including such notables as World of Outlaw Late Model champion Rick Eckert, dirt Modified legend Kenny Brightbill, Billy Pauch Jr., and Frank Cozze plus pavement specialists Eric Beers, Earl Paules, Kevin Graver Jr., and Otto Sitterly.

The National Slingshot All Star Tour and Junior National Slingshot Tour as well as the Stage 1 Modifieds, Micro Stock Racing Series, World Formula Micro Stocks, Sr. Champ Karts, Jr. Sportsman Champ Karts and the Vintage Division of the ATQMRA will make up the action filled day.

Sunday Racing begins at 4:00 pm. Pit gates open at 11:30 am. Grandstands at 2:30 pm. Adult general admission is $15. Pit entrance is $30 per person.

A complete schedule for Sunday’s “Mid-Summer Thunder” will be forthcoming in short order.
