The tone of Tim Brown’s season has changed after Saturday: Brown took his first checkered flag of the season and broke the winless streak that has frustrated him for the first half of 2014.

Now Brown and his team hope to grab a few more wins, and they can also turn their attention to the points race. The nine-time champion has been steadily gaining on Burt Myers for the last several weeks.

However, he’s still got a large gap to overcome due to one weekend of subpar performances on May 30 and May 31. Brown finished 10th on May 30 only to come back and get caught up in wreckage on the last lap of May 31’s 100-lapper. Brown finished 10th on that night as well.

He had entered the weekend only 10 points behind Burt Myers but dropped to 36 points out of the lead as a result of his poor luck. Since then, Brown has steadily whittled away at Myers’s points lead each and every race – but he’s still got a 29 point gap to overcome.

In the Double D Construction Services Sportsman Series, Ryan Robertson of Winston-Salem had to deal with some bad luck of his own. Robertson raced conservatively in the first 20-lapper, dropping out of the race lead and falling back to fourth – but keeping his eye on the bigger picture.

A lucky draw sent Robertson up to third for the start of the second race, right behind the bumper of Zack Clifton of Walkertown. For 19 of the 20 laps, Robertson pressured the bumper of Clifton trying to shake him out of the lead. Clifton held strong even though at one point the battle with Robertson led to his rear bumper cover being ripped off.

Robertson made a move on Clifton at last minute, darting to the inside to grab away the lead. The instant that Robertson completed the pass, Clifton gave a shot to Robertson’s bumper. Clifton took the checkered; Robertson spun and finished 10th.

The bad luck of Robertson is coupled with the strong performance from Taylor Branch of Lewisville. Branch gains seven points on Robertson, reducing Robertson’s points lead to only five points.

The points race tightened up on Saturday in the Traffic Control Safety Services Stadium Stock Series. A.J. Sanders of Mocksville took the checkered, with Chuck Wall of Lexington finishing in second. That leaves only 12 points separating fourth ranked A.J. Sanders from the points lead.

Chris Allison of Mocksville maintains the points lead, while Chuck Wall moves to within two points of Allison. Daniel Yates of Lexington sits in third, only 10 points out of the lead.

Another night of racing action is scheduled for this Saturday night. The Modifieds race in twin 25s plus a Sportsman 60-lapper and racing for the Street Stock and Stadium Stock Divisions. To honor our nation’s independence, there will be a parachute jump from the Green Beret Parachute Team. And the night will end with another wild and crazy 109 U-Pull-It Skid Race.

Gates open at 6:00 for practice, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night. Directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
