Ramos Tops Big Ten, But Steffenhagen Wins
The Big Ten Super Stocks were at Spencer last week. It looked like Mike Ramos would have his way as he took the checkers from Big Ten starter Butch Williams.
“I didn’t want to see that last caution,” stated Ramos, referring to a late race yellow. He probably didn’t want to see the post race tech barn. It was there he was disqualified and the win handed over to Jim Steffenhagen Jr. , who had started at the rear of the field after suffering brake issues in his heat race.
“I didn’t expect this,” said Steffenhagen in an on track interview.
In NASCAR Sunoco Modified action Kevin Timmerman was able to pick up his 18th Spencer career win moving him into 4th on the Sunoco Modified All-Time victory list at the track.
In support action, Shaun Frarey earned his fifth 4-Cyclinder Scorpion feature win in six starts. Van Grant won his second Super Six feature of the year and Bryce Norton kept his win record going in the INEX Legends. He now has three wins in a row.
The 35-lap NASCAR Sunoco Modified feature saw Bobby Lippa take the lead, but surrender it one lap later to Kevin Timmerman. Timmerman then built up nearly a full straight away lead over Eddie Hawkins, Darryl Lewis Jr., Tommy Catalano and Mike Leaty.
The yellow flew on lap 28, bunching the field together. The restart proved disastrous for Catalano and Lewis Jr. as they came together and spun off the second turn. On the second try Mike Leaty made the most of it taking second. This moved Smith back to third followed by Hawkins and Andy Lewis.
The yellow came out again when Tommy Catalano slowed on the track, lap 32. This set up a three lap dash to the checkers. The restart saw Leaty move to the top of the track and slow with motor problems. Smith now took off after Timmerman, but did not have enough laps to make any move. Timmerman took the win followed by Smith, Andy Lewis, Hawkins and Billy Semmler.
“This team made a bunch of changes over the last few weeks,” related Timmerman. “In last week’s second 20-lapper we finally seemed to get it right, so we kept that setup. I want to apologize to Bobby Lippa. I got into him on that first lap and I didn’t mean to.”
The Super Stock 25-lap feature saw terry Cheetham take the lead until Zach Willis was able to get under him when Cheetham drifted high in the fourth turn on lap seven. The yellow flew when Cheetham slowed in the first turn.
The restart saw Mike Ramos take command of the lead followed by Joe Mancuso, Willis, Steffenhagen Jr. and Tom Markham.
The yellow flew again on lap 24 setting up a green-white-checker finish. Ramos remained in command, with Steffenhagen Jr., taking second on the final lap from Mancuso, who had actually led the 25 lap. Markham, Cheetham and Mancuso, who slowed exiting the fourth turn on the last lap, rounded out the top five finishers. The rest is history as Ramos was not able to get past the tech barn.
The Super Sixes saw a struggle for the lead between four cars at the drop of the green flag. Van Grant came out in front with Josh Schoonmaker in second followed by Brandon Allen, Barrett Schenk and Brian Hallett.

The only other yellow came on lap 18, when Schoonmaker slid off the fourth turn and onto the front stretch grass, making slight contact with the inside concrete wall. This second yellow set up the second green-white checker finish on the night. Grant held on for the win, followed by Brandon Allen, Brian Hallett, Tim Faro and Ryan Hillegeer.
The 4-Cyclider Scorpions saw a number of yellow flags fly slowing the action. In the earlier part of the 15-lapper, Alison Knoepfler held off Joe Clark. A lap seven restart saw Shaun Frarey, who had spun out on lap one, pass Knoepfler for the led.
Frarey went on to take the win followed by Clark, Beth Dennie, Donnie Knapp Jr. and Alison Knoepfler, who slowed on the final lap of the race.
“Every time you win here, they add weight to your car,” stated Frarey. “All of this extra weight seems to make this car work that much better. It was a tough race tonight.”
The 15-lap INEX legends race would run green-to-checkers. Brad Salatino led until lap four, when Bryce Norton ducked low exiting the second turn, taking the preferred line around the big half mile oval. Norton went on to take the win followed by Salatino, Josh Marchese, Kevin Bertolone and newcomer Nick Reff.
SPENCER NOTES: NASCAR announced July 11th it has reached an agreement with Chester, Conn., and Charlestown, N.H.-based Whelen Engineering to enhance its long-standing status as the Official Warning Lights of NASCAR with the additional position as the Official Vehicle Illumination Lights of NASCAR. This will ensure they remain the sponsors of the All-American point system.
This coming Friday, July 18th, Spencer will be hosting their second night, in 2014, of Twin 20’s for the Sunoco Modifieds. Also on tap are the Super Sixes and the Four Cylinder Scorpions. Kids will also have their second chance at the bicycle races during intermission. Racing starts at 7:30 p.m. sharp.
Spencer Speedway is located just fifteen minutes east of Rochester, NY, along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson. Spencer Speedway is the local “ NASCAR Place to Race” for Central New York in 2014. Points earned each week at Spencer are counted into the national NASCAR Whelen All-American Points.
