After suffering through his fair share of misfortune earlier this season Eric Mauriello completed a turn around on Saturday night by winning the 40-lap Downs Ford Modified stock car main event. It was the Howell resident’s first win of the 2014 campaign.

Glen Slocum, Jr. of Navesink jumped to the lead at the first green flag but Mauriello acted quickly to take the lead on lap two. Adam LaCicero of Lavallette was then Mauriello’s first challenger before New Egypt’s Jason Hearne advanced to second. Hearne chased Mauriello for 15 laps before Holmdel’s Andrew Krause powered into second. Krause then tried every trick in the book to wrestle away the lead.

The big turning point in the event came with just 4 laps to go. As the duo raced side-by-side through turns three and four with Krause on the inside lane their cars touched. Both cars slid with Mauriello regaining control of his while Krause’s car spun.

Mauriello then raced on to the win over LaCicero, Trevor Alspach of Willingboro who started dead last, Shawna Ingraham of Brick and Willingoboro’s Zack Alspach.

“”At the end of the race Andrew (Krause) really drove the inside lane hard,” Mauriello said of the incident with four laps remaining. “He was trying his best to get past me and I was holding my line. It was just a racing thing to me.”

The Legend Cars raced in a companion 40-lapper and Brendon Bock of Riverhead, N.Y. took the win. After an early spin Bock raced through the 22-car field to take the lead with just four laps remaining. Matt Marring, who led most of the way, was second, with Edison’s Brian Spencer, Dan Roslin of Little Egg Harbor and Mitch Dowd wrapped up the top five.

Larry Thompson of Parlin won his first ever 30-lap Sportsman main event after leading most of the way. Thompson was busy to the finish holding off Holmdel’s Andrew Krause, Howell’s Kevin Davison, Ken Matlach of New Hyde Park, N.Y. and Manasquan” Kenny Van Wickle.

Scott Riggleman of Manchester swept both 25-lappers for the Factory Stocks. In the first race, rain postponed from May 3, Riggleman led Wall’s Tiffany Olejnik, Union’s Joey Helberg, Marty Van Druten of Toms River and Brick’s Ronnie Mullen to the line. In the second Factory Stock race Van Druten, Helberg, Wall’s Bob Haberstick and Mullen completed the top five.

Mike Wahl of East Islip, N.Y. won the non-stop 25-lap race for the 4 Cylinder Stocks. Point leader James Meyers of Port Monmouth, Wall’s Cole Ormsbee, Alonzo Morales and Ron Becker were second through fifth.

Wall Stadium roars back to action this Saturday night (July 26). “’Country Night” competition will see the Sportsman cars headline in a 50-lap main event along with Factory Stocks, 4 Cylinder Stocks, Limited Late Models, TQ Midgets and Vintage TQ Midgets all in action. The Downs Ford Modifieds will then return on Saturday August 2 for the running of the 100-lap, $5,000 to win “Summer Sizzler.”

Pit area parking opens at 1:00 p.m. this Saturday with practice set for 3:00 p.m. Grandstand seating opens at 5:00 p.m. and qualifying is set for 5:30 p.m. with main events to follow.
