The Night of Destruction on Saturday at Bowman Gray Stadium saw monster trucks and demolition derby cars crunching sheet metal – but the biggest hit of the night came to the points ladder for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series.

Tim Brown of Tobaccoville shot out into the lead as the green flag dropped for the first scheduled 25-lapper, with Burt Myers of Walnut Cove filing in behind him in second. Myers gave a few stiff nudges to the bumper of Brown early in the race, but Brown was unphased.

With a long stretch of green flag racing, the leaders were soon approaching lapped traffic. Myers took advantage of the opportunity to gain some ground on Brown, closing the gap and threatening to take the lead away.

On lap 20, Myers made his move with a shot to the rear bumper of Brown, sending Brown spinning out of the lead. The situation deteriorated from there with Brown waiting on Myers and then an infamous two-car demolition derby between the two contenders during the caution.

After considering the situation in depth, NASCAR Officials penalized Myers and Brown by docking them 100 points in the championship point standings. “We believe that these penalties will send a message that this is something we can not tolerate,” said NASCAR Chief Steward John Horton, about the crashing that occurred while the caution was displayed.

The deduction drops Brown from the points lead down to fourth, and Myers falls from second down to fifth in the points standings. With nine races left in the season – including a double-points race during the season finale, Brown and Myers could still turn on the heat and secure the championship in 2014.

While the melee between Brown and Myers took its toll on their cars and their points standings, three competitors have now been rocketed up to close contention for the championship.

Lee Jeffreys of Winston-Salem leaps up to take over the points lead, while Danny Bohn of Huntersville – Saturday’s winner – moves up to second. Jason Myers of Walnut Cove finished second on Saturday and now is third in the points standings.

Not only are all three drivers hoping that 2014 will be their first championship – but a mere five points separates them. This season appears to be shaping up to be a dash for the championship that won’t be soon forgotten.

In the Double D Construction Services Sportsman Series, Ryan Robertson of Winston-Salem holds on to the points lead. Taylor Branch of Lewisville remains second.

A.J. Sanders of Mocksville had to head off to the pits after suffering a flat tire as he battled with Jason Keaton of Mocksville in the Traffic Control Safety Services Stadium Stock Series race. Chris Allison of Mocksville moves up to tie Sanders for second, while Chuck Wall of Lewisville strengthens his points lead.

The action continues and the points races rage on at the Stadium this Saturday – it’s Modified twin 50s plus racing for the Sportsman, Street Stock, and Stadium Stock Divisions. And fans can see it all for the best price in town – it’s $2 Ladies’ Night! Women get in for only two dollars to see all the racing action.

Gates open at 6:00 for practice, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night. Directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
