Title contender Kevin Davison took a giant step towards his goal of driving championship Saturday night by winning the 50-lap extra distance main event for Sportsman stock cars at Wall Stadium. It was the second win of the year for the popular Howell driver.

Jason Caruso of Howell was the first leader of the event followed closely by Matt Langbein of Laurence Harbor and Davison. Caruso held his ground through a couple of restarts for minor incidents during the first 15 laps when Davison advanced to second. Three laps of jousting for the lead ensued before Davison raced to the outside lane to take the lead.

Moments later chaos erupted in the fourth turn.

On a lap 19 restart contenders Larry Thompson of Parlin and Ken Matlach of New Hyde Park, N.Y. touched wheels with Matlach’s car slamming the fourth turn rail. Several feet of the steel barrier were destroyed and Matlach’s racecar suffered the same fate. Fortunately Matlach climbed from the car uninjured.

It took safety crews one hour and forty minutes to make the needed repairs.

Once back to action Davison was up to the task as he cruised home the winner with Caruso posting an impressive second place finish. Wall’s Robert Silver, Thompson and Langbein wrapped up the top five.

“I am so happy that Kenny (Matlach) is ok,” Davison said when he climbed from his car and held the Snap On Tools trophy. “From what I could see it was one of the worst wrecks ever.

“My car was real good for the entire race thanks to the people who work on it. I had a great night.”

Brick’s Ronnie Mullen took the lead on lap three and then held off Manchester’s Scott Riggleman and Tiffany Olejnik of Wall to win the companion 25-lapper for the Factory Stocks. Marty Van Druten of Toms River and Wall’s Bob Haberstick, Jr. completed the top five.

Anthony Crimaldi of Port Monmouth took the lead on the tenth lap and cruised to the win in the 25-lap Limited Late Model feature. Nick Shaw of Chatham grabbed second in the closing laps while Brian Doyle of Ronkonkoma, N.Y., Brick’s Ronnie Mullen and Bayville’s Mike Tillett wrapped up the top five.

Burlington’s Alonzo Morales took the lead on lap three and never looked back in winning the 25-lapper for the 4 Cylinder Stocks. Point leader James Meyers of Port Monmouth, Howell’s Ron Becker, Mike Wahl of East Islip, N.Y. and Wall’s Cole Ormsbee were second through fifth.

Ryan Tidman of Levittown, Pa. won the “Tony Romit Memorial” for the visiting TQ Midgets.

Wall Stadium roars back to action this Saturday night (August 2) with the running of the $5,000 to win “Summer Sizzler” for the Downs Ford Modifieds. Factory Stocks, 4 Cylinder Stocks, Legend Cars and “Stock Car Bowling” will also be on the card. Two lucky young fans will be rewarded with a bicycle sponsored by Modified driver Zane Zeiner and Modified owner Jeff Willett.

Pit area parking opens at 1:00 p.m. this Saturday with practice set for 3:00 p.m. Grandstand seating opens at 5:00 p.m. and qualifying is set for 5:45 p.m. with main events to follow.
