This coming Saturday evening, August 2 at 6:00 pm, Lehighton’s Mahoning Valley Speedway will present a regular six division card of stock car racing.
And, with the second half of the season underway, there are some very tight point battles that are shaping up, most notably in the Modified and Street Stock classes.
While top track invader Matt Hirschman won last week’s big 100 lap feature, the title contenders duked it out and by night’s end the standings got very tight.
Three time winner Kris Graver crashed out, Earl Paules finished third, Nevin George clawed his way to sixth and Eric Beers was ninth leaving all four separated by 51 points.
Graver is at the top of the leader board while Paules and George are only three and six points respectively behind and Beers not far off at 51.
All four have led the standings this season and remain the main challengers in the quest for the track crown. Also lurking in the shadows is “The Real Deal” Kyle Strohl just 76 points back.
Likewise the Street Stockers are in a similar fight as two-time champion TJ Gursky leads Jillian Long by 21 markers. Within striking distance sits Jason Kuhn, defending champion Chip Wanamaker and Zach Graver. There is less than 50 points within the top five heading into Saturday’s action.
Paules is trying to win his third straight Late Model crown and is in tune with it although recent winner Frankie Althouse is continuing to give him a run for his money.
Kevin Graver Jr., has a decent handle on the Dirt Mod standings as does Nick Baer and Corey Edelman in the Pro 4 and Hobby Stocks divisions.
All divisions will run heats and regular distance features which include 35 laps for the Modifieds, 30 laps for the Street Stocks, 25 laps each for the Late Models and Dirt Mods and 20 lappers for the Pro 4s and Hobby Stocks.
Pit gates open at noon. There will be early paid practice from 1:00 to 3:00. Regular warm-ups will be held from 4:00 – 5:00. Adult general admission is $12.
