It was 198 laps in the making but the last lap was unforgettable.

The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour made its annual stop at Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday in the Strutmasters.com 199. Danny Bohn of Huntersville grabbed the victory in a wild race dominated by attrition, cluttered traffic, and one of the most exciting finishes in Tour history.

Bohn turned the fastest qualifying lap, placing him on the pole for the start of the race. Andy Seuss of Hampstead, NH – the current Tour points leader who is still winless in his races at Bowman Gray Stadium – started on the outside front row.

Bohn shot out into the lead and seemed unbeatable. For four caution restarts, he held his own. Kyle Ebersole of Hummelstown, PA raced side-by-side with Bohn for several laps but was unsuccessful at overtaking Bohn’s #65 machine. The two then settled into a long stretch of green flag racing.

The field began to spread out as the laps ticked by and slower cars began to get lapped. At the rear of the pack, Joe Ryan Osborne of Holland, PA and Gary Putnam of Vernon, CT were fighting for position and to stay on the lead lap. Danny Bohn then found himself between the proverbial rock and a hard place, not wanting to risk going to the outside to pass by the lapped cars but also getting threatened by Kyle Ebersole riding his rear bumper.

The situation erupted on the final lap as the white flag was waving. Osborne and Putnam collided, collecting Bohn and Ebersole in the mess as well. Even though his car spun around, Bohn stayed on the gas and piloted back into the lead. He went on to take the checkered flag as it waved simultaneously with the caution.

“I really don’t know what the lapped cars were doing. They obviously had spotters and they didn’t want to let us by - which almost cost us the race,” said Danny Bohn. “I would pull over and give them respect if I was getting lapped. I know they want to stay on the lead lap, but it just wasn’t their night.”

Cole Powell of Mount Brydges, Ontario maneuvered into second during the wreckage with Luke Fleming of Mount Airy moving into third. “I saw them piling up – and I just hit the grass. I’ve got a lot of experience doing that driving Sportsman down here,” said Fleming. “I just gouged the gas, went through sideways, and was able to get back on the track quickly enough.”

The 40-lap race for the Double D Construction Services Sportsman Series was a caution-filled endurance event, with Taylor Branch of Lewisville emerging with the victory. Derek Stoltz of Walkertown powered forward to grab the lead until Branch slipped by on the outside row during a restart. Derek Stoltz ended up finishing second, and John Holleman of Winston-Salem took third.

In the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series, Doug Wall of Pfafftown took the win in another caution-dominated race. Wall held off Billy Gregg of Lexington who finished in second. Blake Shupe of Mount Airy came in third.

Wesley Thompson of Advance won the first 15-lapper for the Traffic Control Safety Services Stadium Stock Series. Stephen Sanders of Mocksville took the checkered in the second race.
