After advancing to second before spinning and then climbing back through the field to take the lead before pitting with a flat right front tire Anthony Sesely of Matawan raced through the field for the third time in the final five laps to take the lead and the win with a quarter of a lap remaining in the inaugural $5,000 to win “Summer Sizzler 100” for Downs Ford Modified stock cars at Wall Stadium Saturday night. The race was run in less than perfect conditions with rain falling during the day and a mist dampening the track in the late afternoon. Still, a good field of cars and a large crowd was on hand leaving many to wonder how strong fan count and car count would have been on a clear and warm summer evening.

Pennsylvania’s Zane Zeiner jumped to the lead at the outset and held the lead through the first 89 laps while just about everyone else in the field pitted for fresh tires. Recent Garden State Classic champion Trevor Alspach of Willingboro finally slipped past on the inside lane with 89 laps complete and the fireworks were ready to begin.

Sesely, who had earlier spun from second, was in the runner-up spot again and went after Alspach. In the heat of battle the duo touched in the first turn on lap 95 with Sesely cutting a tire and Alspach slowing as a result of the contact.

That left Freehold’s Chas Okerson and Zack Alspach of Willingboro to fight for the top spot before they made contact in turn two on lap 97 with Okerson out for the night. Zack Alspach and Howell’s Eric Mauriello were then left to fight for the win.

This duo battled for the lead the final three laps as Sesely recovered into third spot. Heading down the backstretch and into turn three on the final lap Zack Alspach and Mauriello touched and went spinning and Sesely was able to avoid the trouble to take the win.

Zack Alspach held on for second, while Adam LaCicero of Lavallette, Holmdel’s Andrew Krause and Jason Hearne of New Egypt completed the top five.

“That was one of the toughest races I’ve ever run,” Sesely said in the winner’s circle. “The guys who race here every week are tough! They run pretty clean but boy do they run hard!

“Went I had to stop for that flat tire I never thought I would end up winning. My spotter just told me to keep digging and he was right!”

Taking the lead late in the 25-lap companion main event for the 4 Cylinder Stocks Alonzo Morales of Burlington raced to his second straight victory. Wall’s Shanon Mongeau, Mike Wahl of East Islip, N.Y., James Meyers of Port Monmouth and Wall’s Cole Ormsbee wrapped up the top five.

Howell’s Robert French took the lead on a lap 19 restart and then drove to victory in the 25-lapper for the Legend Cars. Early leader Dan Roslin of Little Egg Harbor, Edison’s Brian Spencer, Mitch Dowd and Brandon Traino were second through fifth.

Wall’s Tiffany Olejnik grabbed the lead on lap five and then raced to her third win of the year in the 25-lapper for the Factory Stocks. Current point leader Scott Riggleman of Manchester was second, with Union’s Joey Helberg, Neil Rutt of Port Monmouth and Brick’s Ronnie Mullen rounding out the top five.

Wall Stadium roars back to action this Saturday night (August 9) with “Salute to the Champions” night. On Saturday, all 5-time or more driving champions will be honored. Modified champions Gil Hearne, Tony Siscone, Chas Okerson and Dave Michel say they will be on hand. Also planning to attend are Street Stock champion Rich Mongeau and recent Sportsman champ Kevin Eyres. Two of the speedway’s late all-time champions, Parker Bohn and Ray Gastelu, will also be honored. In addition to meeting many of these great drivers, fans will get to see an original Dale Earnhardt, Sr. driven No. 3 that he drove during the 1997 and 1998 seasons.

On the third mile high-banked paved oval the Limited Late Models will race in a 50-lapper while the Downs Ford Modifieds, Sportsman racers and Factory Stocks will compete in regular distance main events. A special Ladies’ Race and the Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club will also be on the card.

Pit area parking opens at 1:00 p.m. this Saturday with practice set for 3:00 p.m. Grandstand seating opens at 5:00 p.m. and qualifying is set for 5:45 p.m. with main events to follow.
