The 2014 clock is ticking at Bowman Gray Stadium. And when the alarm goes off at the end of August, a new champion may be getting a crown in the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series.

With last Friday’s racing being cancelled due to rain, the Modified points standings remain the same this week. That leaves just three more events for the competitors to stake their claim at the title.

Lee Jeffreys of Winston-Salem is currently out front. His father, Robert Jeffreys, was the Modified champion 20 years ago – in 1994 and 1995. Lee Jeffreys has been in the running before but was never able to seal the deal. And he doesn’t have a wide margin to work with either in 2014: He leads Jason Myers of Walnut Cove by a mere one point.

Jason Myers is also gunning for his first Modified title. Older brother Burt Myers of Walnut Cove has been the Modified champ six times. Although father Gary Myers was incredibly successful, he never managed to claim a title.

Jason Myers finished second in the points for the last two years and has been steadily making his way to the front of the rankings for the last few weeks. Perhaps 2014 will be his season.

And a relative newcomer, Danny Bohn of Huntersville, currently sits in third. Bohn was no stranger to Modified racing but only started to compete at the Stadium in 2010. He finds himself 14 points out of the lead after having to deal with some mechanical issues in last event.

In the points standings for the Double D Construction Service Sportsman Series, Ryan Robertson of Winston-Salem holds on to the lead. Taylor Branch of Lewisville made his way though the field, fighting past Derek Stoltz of Walkertown to grab the checkered. Although Branch still remains second in the points, the victory cuts down on the gap separating him from Robertson.

David Sumner of Trinity ran into some bad luck in the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series. A wreck relegated him to a disappointing 19th place finish, dropping him out of the points lead down to second. Rookie Chase Hunt of Lexington climbs up to claim the lead in Sumner’s absence.

In the Traffic Control Safety Services Stadium Stock Series, Chuck Wall of Lexington finished third to slightly strengthen his points lead.

The points races are drawing to a close, so everything will be on the line this Saturday with Whelen Engineering Night. The Modifieds battle in twin 25s, plus there will be racing for the Sportsman, Street Stock, and Stadium Stock Divisions. And the night will end with the always wild 109 U-Pull-It Chain Race for teams of two cars chained together.

Ticket prices are just $10 for adults, $2 for children 6-11, and children 5 and under are free. Gates open at 6:00 for practice, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night. Directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
