Last Saturday night, August 16 at Mahoning Valley Speedway, the entire six division program was in the books by 9:30 p.m. taking all of three-and-a-half hours to complete. It was one of those nights when all the racing was spot on and why fans flock to the paved quarter mile oval.

Each class of cars demonstrated excellent competition led by Modified winner Lou Strohl who edged John Markovic for his first win in over five years.

And, while Strohl and Markovic would duke it out for the checkers there was just as much close action behind them with more top performers. Chip Santee scored third at the finish with defending track champion Eric Beers and Nevin George completing the top five. At Mahoning Valley those five combined account for 156 wins and 12 championships, showing just how high a caliber the competition is.

“I have raced at a lot of tracks and I’ll tell you that Mahoning is a driver’s race track. If you don’t have the true driving talent, you’re not going to do anything there. In my opinion Mahoning Valley, right now, has the highest caliber of talent in pavement Modifieds,” said Strohl.
Strohl and the entire cast of those high caliber drivers will be back at again this coming Saturday evening, August 23 as the track’s six divisions, Modifieds, Late Models, Street Stocks, Dirt Mods, Pro 4s and Hobby Stocks will contest in regular heat and feature races. Plus the Micro Stock Racing Series will be on the card adding to the thrills.

Not only is last Saturday going to be a hard act to follow, but there is also the matter of point battles. With just seven regular season races to go, three of the six classes are extremely close.

In the Modifieds Earl Paules holds a three and seven point edge respectively over Kris Graver and Nevin George. Frankie Althouse is up by just on over Paules in the Late Models while TJ Gursky sits nine markers ahead of Jillian Long in the Street Stocks.

Adult general admission for this Saturday, August 23 is $12. $2.00 off for students, seniors 65 + and active military. Must have ID. Children 10 and under are free. Kids Big Wheel races will also take place during intermission.

A reminder also that a Small Car Enduro has been added to the September 6 program. Sponsored by Circle 1 Designs, the timed race will pay $400 to win. However, if 30 or more cars take the green then the top prize goes to $600 with the top six spots also getting paid.

Mahoning Valley Speedway is located on PA route 443, two miles west of Lehighton. Additional info can be found on the track’s website at www.mahoningvalley-speedway.com Also on Facebook at Mahoning Valley Speedway.
