Pennink, Gray, Goff, Hayes, Fearn, & DiMatteo Score September 5th NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Feature Wins at Stafford Speedway
Stafford Speedway returned to NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing action with a Five-Star Series event as part of the Five-Star Series program on September 5th. Taking down NASCAR Whelen All-American Series weekly feature wins on the night were Rowan Pennink, who won for the third consecutive week and 5th time in the last 7 SK Modified® feature events in a wild and thrilling run to the checkered flag with Ryan Preece, Joey Cipriano, and Ted Christopher. Adam Gray scored his fourth win of the year in the 30-lap Late Model feature, Jay Goff scored his first win of the year in the 20-lap SK Light feature, Andrew Hayes locked down his fourth win of the season in the 20-lap Ltd. Late Model feature, Alexandra Fearn scored her second win of the season in the 15-lap DARE Stock feature, and Cory DiMatteo scored his third win of the season in the 20-lap Legend Cars feature.
In the 40-lap SK Modified® feature event, Sean Foster took the early lead with Joey Cipriano and Dan Avery side by side for second. Ted Christopher and Ryan Preece were side by side for fourth when the caution came out with 1 lap complete for a spin by Nichole Morgillo in turn 3.
Avery took the lead on the restart with Preece moving up to second. Rowan Pennink was on the move as he took third while Foster fell back to fourth in a duel with Cipriano. Foster was able to clear Cipriano on lap-5 and Preece made a move to the inside of Avery to take the lead at the line. The two leaders remained side by side for three laps before Preece got clear into the lead. Pennink was now side by side with Avery for second while Cipriano had gotten around Foster to take over fourth.
Pennink quickly moved by Avery to take over second and he began to immediately apply pressure to Preece for the lead. Pennink made a move to the inside of Preece to take over the race lead on lap-12. The caution came out with 13 laps complete for Chris Jones, who spun in turn 3. Curt Brainard and Morgillo also came to a stop in turn 3.
Pennink took the lead back under green with Preece slotting into second. Avery and Cipriano were side by side for third with Ted Christopher moving around Foster to take fifth. The caution came back out with 16 laps complete for Eric Berndt and Doug Coby, who touched and spun in turn 1. Their spin also collected the car of Ronnie Williams.
Pennink and Preece were locked in a side by side duel for the lead back under green with Preece taking the lead at the line by a nose. Neither driver was giving an inch as they were side by side for 4 laps before Pennink got clear of Preece on lap-20. Cipriano was side by side with Foster for third with Glen Reen and Michael Gervais, Jr. lined up behind them.
Preece made a move to the inside of Pennink on lap-27 to take over the race lead. Preece’s pass allowed both Cipriano and Reen to close in and make it a 4 way fight for the lead. Preece’s lead was short lived as Pennink went back past the very next lap and the caution came back out with 28 laps complete for a spin by Gervais in turn 4.
Pennink and Preece resumed their duel on the restart but behind them, Reen spun in turn 4 and the field scrambled to take evasive action as the caution came right back out.
Pennink and Preece were again side by side for the lead but Pennink was able to pull in front of Preece after one lap of side by side action. Cipriano and Foster were side by side for third, with Chase Dowling and Christopher side by side for fifth place, just in front of Keith Rocco. Curt Brainard and Morgillo spun in turn 3 and Williams came to a stop in the turn 3+4 grass facing the wrong way to bring the caution out with 32 laps complete.
Pennink was able take the lead on the restart with Preece right behind him in second. Cipriano slotted into third with Christopher fourth and Rocco fifth. Preece was looking high and low for a way around Pennink but Pennink was able to hold him off. Preece dove to the inside of Pennink in turn 3 to take the lead as the cars came to the white flag. Pennink went back by Preece, but just as he made his move the caution came out for a spin by Bob Georgiades in turn 3 that set up a green-white-checkered finish, and what a finish it turned out to be.
Preece and Pennink were side by side back under green with Preece leading Pennink by a nose as they took the white flag. As Pennink and Preece headed into turn 3 on the final lap, Christopher got into the back bumper of Preece, which loosened his car up and allowed Pennink to streak to the checkered flag and become a winner for the third consecutive Friday night and record his 5th win in the last 7 races. Cipriano came through to finish second, with Preece, Christopher, and Owen rounding out the top-5 in an absolutely thrilling run to the checkered flag.
In the 30-lap Late Model feature event, Kyle Casagrande pulled out to the early lead with his brother Cory, hot in pursuit from second place. J.J. Hill was third, just in front of Jim Peterson with last week’s winner Josh Wood holding down fifth place.
Kyle Casagrande had opened up a lead of nearly a half straightaway over Cory Casagrande, but that lead was erased by the caution with came out with 9 laps complete for J.J. Hill. Hill’s car got very loose in turns 3+4 on lap-9 and he then came to a stop at the exit of turn 4.
Kyle Casagrande took the lead back under green with Peterson moving up to second. Adam Gray also got around Cory Casagrande to move into third and drop Casagrande back to fourth, just in front of Kevin Gambacorta. Darrell Keane did a 360 in turn 3 on lap-10 but he was able to keep going and the race stayed green. Gambacorta got loose on the inside of Casagrande on lap-11 and both cars went up the hill, allowing Tom Butler to move into fourth and Tom Fearn took fifth. The caution came back out with 12 laps complete for Scott Cook, who came to a stop in turn 4.

Gray took the lead back under green with Kyle Casagrande behind him in second. Fearn was now up to third, with Gambacorta fourth and Tom Butler fifth. Gray had pulled out to a comfortable lead over Casagrande but as they approached the closing laps, Casagrande was closing back in on the bumper of Gray.
With 2 laps to go, Gray’s lead was a car length over Casagrande with Fearn, Gambacorta, and Butler still making up the top-5. Casagrande couldn’t get close enough to Gray to make a bid for the lead as Gray took down his fourth win of the season. Fearn finished third, with Gambacorta and Butler rounding out the top-5.
