After a valiant try to get the show in, Mahoning Valley Speedway had no other choice but to throw in the towel for the six division program of stock car racing as well as a Small Car Enduro.

Rain and lightning strikes swept across the Lehighton area just as heat races where nearing conclusion.

With safety as the number one priority, track officials made the call to end the show just as the second Hobby Stock heat was about to take to the track. The Dirt Mods also did not get to qualify and thus the entire night was canceled.

This now leaves just four point races left to run and makes an already tight championship battle with several classes even more intense.

The focus now turns to Saturday night, September 13, which will be headlined by the Bob “Heavy” Scherer Memorial race for the Modifieds.

The special 50 lap event will pay $2000 to win plus there is a $250 bonus to the driver who is running ninth on lap nine and another $250 bonus for the driver who finishes in ninth position. A rain date of September 20 will be used if need be.

Scherer is a former Mahoning driver who always drove a number 9 for car owner Dale Beers. He is also recognized for his mechanical genius as the championship chief mechanic for Eric Beers, his brother-in-law. Scherer passed away earlier this year.

Also that night will be a special 30-lap, $300 to win main for the Hobby Stocks plus the Micro Stocks are on the racing card. Late Models, Street Stocks, Dirt Mods and Pro 4s will see action too.

Wrist bands from Saturday’s washout will be good for admission to the speedway for the next two weeks only. Adult general admission for the September 13 night is $15, however, promoter Floyd Santee has declared no additional charge will be added to those with wrist bands, noting that he was appreciative of their patronage for coming out to the races but unfortunately got shorted due to the rain.

Mahoning Valley Speedway is located on PA route 443, two miles west of Lehighton. Additional info can be found on the track’s website at www.mahoningvalley-speedway.com Also on Facebook at Mahoning Valley Speedway.
