The first rain out of the 2014 season could not have come at a worse time this past Saturday at Barbara & Jim Cromarty's Riverhead Raceway with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour in town for the Riverhead 200. With the WMT booked for the next two weekends in September and Riverhead Raceway having a 30-year agreement with the Town of Riverhead that stock car racing ends in September the race unfortunately can not be made up and is canceled.

An ominous forecast greeted the 31 NASCAR WMT teams when the garage opened at 11:00 am but the sun did peek out allowing for the NASCAR WAAS classes to run their full hour of practice. That was followed by the WMT practice which was cut short by rain around 4:00 pm. Justin Bonsignore of Holtsville topped the speed charts with a lap of 12.088. Following Justin were Tom Rogers Jr. of Riverhead, Timmy Solomito of Islip, Ryan Preece of Berlin, Ct. and Ron Silk of Norwalk, Ct. Championship leader Doug Coby of Milford, Ct. was 8th in practice and will now carry his slim 4 point lead over Bonsignore to this weekends race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

The rain would go from an annoying light and damp variety to heavier showers at times but with rain still falling at around 7:00 pm promoters Barbara & Jim Cromarty along with NASCAR's Jimmy Wilson made the heart wrenching decision to cancel the Riverhead 200. Teams were able to get refunds for their pit passes and Hoosier Tire did refund WMT teams their money on unused tires after the show was called.

This Saturday evening it is Track Champions night at Riverhead Raceway with all seven divisions in action. This show will start at 4:30 pm as not only will the feature winners be interviewed but the 2014 champions will also have their moment and interview in victory lane.
