Steven Reed raced through the pack early to take the lead and then raced on to win the 40-lap Downs Ford Modified stock car main event Saturday night at Wall Stadium Speedway. It was the second win of the year for the Jackson resident during what can best be described as a roller coaster season.

Jason Treat of Jackson was the early leader in the event as Reed advanced to the top five in the initial lap. A couple of early restarts saw Reed chip his way into second before Treat and Reed battled side-by-side on a lap seven restart. One more restart on lap nine saw Reed power into the lead for good as he raced on to the victory.

Rookie Modified driver Chad Churilla of St. James, N.Y. advanced to second later in the race before loosing the spot in a battle to Holmdel’s Andrew Krause in the closing laps. Jonathan Mandato of Toms River and Brick’s Shawna Ingraham were fourth and fifth.

Reed, Krause, Ingraham, sixth place finishing Shaun Carrig of Little Falls and the seventh place finishing Eric Mauriello of Howell all inched closer to point leader Chas Okerson of Freehold who finished eighth. The championship race concludes this Saturday night with a double points awarding main event.

“This has really been a strange season for us,” Reed said after the win. “We have never raced so much and been so far back in the points. Just an up and down season. Now it is all about winning.”

The race for the Sportsman driving title now appears to be between point leader Kevin Davison of Howell and Ken Matlach of New Hyde Park, N.Y. Matlach inched closer on Saturday by winning the 30-lap companion event but Davison was with him every step of the way to finish second. Brick’s Robert Sutphin, Matt Langbein of Laurence Harbor and Larry Thompson of Parlin completed the top five.

Scott Riggleman of Manchester took a giant step towards winning the Factory Stock title by winning his eighth main event of the season. Rob McCormick was the runner-up in the 25-lap race, while Union’s Joey Helberg, Joe Mongeau, and Wall’s Tiffany Olejnik were third through fifth.

Brian Doyle of Ronkonkoma moved closer to his second straight driving title by winning the Limited Late Model 25-lapper with a last lap pass over former champ Howie Conk of Jackson. Nick Shaw of Chatham, Anthony Crimaldi of Port Monmouth and title contender Mike Tillett of Bayville wrapped up the top five.

James Meyers of Port Monmouth took his sixth win of the second and moved closer to his first driving crown in the 4 Cylinder Stock 25-lapper. Early leader Randy Hart of Brick held on for second while Wall’s Brien Crosby, Jay Lane and Howell’s Ron Becker were third through fifth.

Mitchell Dowd grabbed his first ever Wall Stadium win in the Legend Cars 25-lapper over Dan Roslin of Egg Harbor Township, point leader Brian Spencer of Edison, Louie Keraitis and Casey Robicheau.

Cassandra Denis won the final battle and the season-long war by taking the Powder Puff 15-lapper for the ladies and winning the driving crown.

Wall Stadium wraps up the 2014 regular season this Saturday night (Sept. 27) with the “Double Point Showdown.” Modifieds will race in a 40-lap main event while the Sportsman cars will race in a 30-lapper. The Legend Cars, 4 Cylinder Stocks, Limited Late Models and the Factory Stocks will also see action in 25-lappers. Points awards for this final regular season contest will be double in all divisions.

Pit area parking opens at 1:00 p.m. this Saturday with practice set for 3:00 p.m. Grandstand seating opens at 5:00 p.m. and qualifying is set for 5:45 p.m. with main events to follow.
