This coming Saturday night, September 27, Lehighton’s Mahoning Valley Speedway will be hosting a very special evening as the track present’s the Bob “Heavy” Scherer Memorial for Modifieds. The race is being staged to pay tribute to Scherer, a former driver and crew chief who passed May 24 after a brief battle with cancer.
A distance of 50 laps will make up the event and pay $2000 to win. Plus in recognition of his team number, 9, there will be a $250 bonus to the driver who is in 9th place on lap 9 of the feature and the 9th place feature finisher.
“Heavy” was a member of the Beers Gang and a longtime fixture on the Eastern Pennsylvania asphalt short track circuit. He is best known for his years of work as chief mechanic for his brother-in-law, pavement Modified star Eric Beers and was instrumental behind many of his wins and titles including the 2004 Race of Champions victory and twice as Mahoning Valley Speedway Modified champion.
The feature line-up will be set via heats and consi. Race time is 6:00 pm, grandstands open at 4:00.
Also all regular track classes, including Late Models, Street Stocks, Dirt Mods, Pro 4s and Hobby Stocks, will be in action plus the evening will conclude with a Small Car Enduro. At intermission Kids Big Wheel Races will take place.
While Modified drivers will be eyeing up the $2000 top prize and very handsome trophy, there is other significance heading into Saturday night as the point chase is extremely close. With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, Kris Graver holds a mere 16 point lead over Earl Paules, 33 over Nevin George and 72 ahead of Beers. Also in the hunt is 15-year old Kyle Strohl.
The Late Model points are also tight as Paules sits in front of Frankie Althouse by 12 and 38 over Mike Sweeney.
In the Street Stocks TJ Gursky is attempting to become the first driver to win three class titles. Kevin Graver Jr., is in control of the Dirt Mod crown while Nick Baer is holding steady over Jake Kibler in the Pro 4s. Last Saturday night Corey Edelman clinched his second straight title in the Hobby Stocks.
For those running in the Small Car Enduro the race pays $400 to win, however, if 30 or more cars are registered the winner then receives $600 and the top six finishers will be paid. Enduro rules can be found on the track’s website at www.mahoningvalley-speedway.com.
Adult general admission is $15, $2.00 off for students, seniors 65 + and active military. Must have ID. Children 10 and under are free. Early paid practice is from 1:00 to 3:00. Regular practice goes from 4:30 to 5:30 with the races going green at 6:00.
The final point races of the season will be on Saturday, October 4. The Modifieds will battle in a 100 lap feature that pays $4000 to win. Rain date is October 5.
The grand finale, Octoberfast 2014, is set for October 25-26, headlined by the $5000 to win 130-lap Modified feature on Saturday of that weekend.
The Modifieds will continue running for big bucks afterwards as the next race, Opening Day 2015, slated for April 11, will be a 125 lapper and $5000 to win.
