TREVOR ALSPACH TAKES MAIN EVENT

Trevor Alspach of Willingboro won the final battle of the regular season on Saturday night, but Chas Okerson of Freehold won the season-long war as he claimed the 2014 Downs Ford Modified stock car driving title at Wall Stadium. It was Okerson’s unprecedented tenth career title at the third mile high-banked paved oval. He now owns four Modified and six Pro Stock crowns.

The 40-lap Modified main event was a thriller throughout that came down to a multi-car battle for the lead in the closing laps. A lap 35 restart saw Eric Mauriello of Howell race past Alspach for the lead only to have Alspach dive to the inside lane with two laps remaining to grab the lead and the win. Jackson’s Steven Reed and Toms River’s Derek Hopkinson raced home second and third with Mauriello fourth. Okerson’s fifth place finish was more than enough to clinch the crown.

Title contender Andrew Krause of Holmdel did his best by winning the 30-lap main event but Howell’s Kevin Davison placed fourth to claim his first ever Sportsman driving crown. Matt Langbein of Laurence Harbor led most of the race before settling for second while Howell’s Chris Lane was third. Brick’s Robert Sutphin wrapped up the top five.

Tiffany Olejnik of Wall raced to her third win of the year in the Factory Stock 25-lapper and clinched second in the race for the driving title in the process. Joey Helberg of Union was the runner-up in the race while Manchester’s Scott Riggleman clinched the title by finishing third. Jerry Koenig and Bob Haberstick, Jr. completed the top five.

Shanon Mongeau won the 25-lapper for the 4 Cylinder Stocks over Alonzo Morales of Burlington, Mike Wahl of East Islip, N.Y. and Wall’s Cole Ormsbee. James Meyers of Port Monmouth cruised home fifth to claim his first ever driving crown.

Robert French of Howell took top honors in the 25-lapper for the Legend Cars over Mitchell Dowd and Dan Roslin, but the fourth place finish by Edison’s Brian Spencer was more than enough for him to claim his first championship. Casey Robicheau was fifth.

Jackson’s Howie Conk won Saturday’s 25-lapper for the Limited Late Models over Nick Shaw of Chatham. Brian Doyle of Ronkonkoma, N.Y. finished third and clinched his second straight crown. Title contender Mike Tillett of Bayville and Brick’s Ronnie Mullen were fourth and fifth.

Wall Stadium officials are now preparing for the first of two big post-season races, the October 18 “Spooky Spectacular.” The afternoon event, which will begin at 2:00 p.m., will feature the Downs Ford Modifieds in a 100-lap, $5000 to win, main event. The Sportsman cars, Factory Stocks, Legend Cars and the TQ Midgets will also be on the agenda.

Wall Stadium presents professional motorsports events on Saturdays and Sundays through September with special post-season races on October 18 and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend in November. The speedway is located on Route 34 in Wall Township, N.J., just one mile north of Garden State Parkway exit 98 and Interstate 195 exit 35B.
