View Full Version : 11/18/14 - Rusty Smith is big winner at the Spencer Speedway Banquet

The 60th annual Spencer Speedway and Dragway Banquet took place on November 15, at the Palmyra VFW, Route 31 in Palmyra, NY. The activities were mc’ed by oval track announcer Joe Marotta and drag announcer Roger Miller. There were 160 guests on hand.

On hand were the top asphalt drivers in the Rochester, NY area to receive their recognition from both NASCAR and the local speedway. NASCAR Points ended up differ from the track points as non-sanctioned nights, like the RoC night, were eliminated from the track point totals to determine the NASCAR titlists.

In the NASCAR 4 Cylinder Scorpions, Shaun Frarey picked up the first place honors. Beth Dennie came home in second and Donald Knapp Jr. finished third in NASCAR track points. Frarey earned 8 feature wins this past year in 12 starts.

The NASCAR Super Six division saw Tim Faro pick up his second track title. However the Spencer track points list Brandon Allen as the track champion. Allen finished second to Faro in NASCAR points followed by Van Grant in third.

In the NASCAR Sunoco Modified division it was Rusty Smith earning his second straight title. Mike Leaty finished second followed by Kevin Timmerman. Smith accumulated 4 NASCAR feature wins, while Leaty earned five. It was Smith’s consistent top fives, 14 in 14 races that put him over the top.

A special thank you went out to Don and Marilyn Toal, Larry and Linda Steurrys, and Chuck and Lee DeRitter for all they did for the 60th anniversary at the speedway.

Bobby Lippa Jr. was singled out for his efforts with the NYS Super Stock division and especially the Dave London Memorial event. A special Award for Excellence was given to him.

Other special awards presented included the Perseverance award went to Carrie Bolton. The Achievement award went to Rusty Smith. As for the “Best Appearing” car awards were presented to Alison Knoepfler in the Super 6s and Kevin Timmerman in the Sunoco Modifieds. Three mechanic of the year awards were handed out this year. The winners were Shaun Frarey, Terry Hallett and Jeffery DeMinck.
