Myers hoping familiar car will take him to Hayes Jewelers 200 victory

The fate of Bowman Gray Stadium’s longest race may have been decided in only 1/1000th of a second. That’s all that separates Jason Myers’s pole lap from the lap of second-place starter
Tim Brown.

With a few hours of crucial practice before Friday’s qualifying session for the Hayes Jewelers 200, Jason Myers of Walnut Cove had a tough decision to make. Would he attempt to compete with his tried and true Stadium race car or roll the dice and race a new car he’s been working on the last few months.

“I told my crew we’d unload them, run the same set of tires on them - and whichever one drove the best is the one we’d work on all day,” said Jason Myers. “The new car might have been a tad bit quicker, but the car we’ve been running over here the last few years was a whole lot more stable and more comfortable. And for a 200-lap race, I figured that would be the best way to go.”

Myers’s choice was a good one. He turned a blazingly fast lap to grab the pole. “You just have to go as hard as you can and hope it works - and it did,” said Myers. “We actually messed up in turns one and two pretty bad. I didn’t think it was that good of a lap, but we got through three and four really well and made the difference up.”

Tim Brown of Tobaccoville was the second fastest qualifier – just 1/1000th of a second slower than Myers. Brandon Ward of Winston-Salem qualified third fastest, with Burt Myers of Walnut Cove having the fourth fastest lap.

Several cars were in line to qualify but did not make the 7:00 PM cutoff. They will have the chance to qualify on Saturday. The top ten qualifiers from Friday have their positions locked in. The remaining competitors have the option of requalifying on Saturday to determine their starting spots.

Ticket gates open at 6:00 for practice. The first race starts at 8:00. For more information, visit www.bowmangrayracing.com.
