Repaving part of first phase of capital improvement plan

The asphalt racing surface of the Lancaster National Speedway & Dragway will be receiving some much needed TLC this coming week as plans to repair large sections of the track have been finalized.

The repaving and repairs are a key component of the first phase of Lancaster's three-year capital improvement plan. Construction work has been happening around the facility for most of the month of April, and additional projects have been scheduled for the following two years.

"When we took a look at what areas of the facility that needed immediate attention, the racing surface was near the top of the list," said General Manager Melissa McGowan, "We need to provide our competitors with a track that will provide them a safe and competitive racing environment that holds its integrity."

Thomann Asphalt, which is conveniently located across Gunnville Road from the speedway, will be handling the repaving project as the new official asphalt contractor of Lancaster National Speedway.

"Thomann was an obvious choice with their proximity to us and their proven track record in the area," said McGowan, "they are a perfect partner for this project."

Over 86,000 square feet of new asphalt will be laid down between the stock car oval and drag strip. The largest section is a 765' x 50' area that starts near the end of the drag strip and extends down through the shut down area. A second large section is a long 660' x 35' area that covers turns one and two of the oval and part of the backstretch. Smaller sections will cover an additional part of the backstretch, all of turn three and the exit of turn four where it connects to the drag strip/front straightaway.

The project is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 4 with the milling down of the existing racing surface. The section of the drag strip slated for repairs will be paved on Tuesday, May 5 with paving of the stock car oval to take place the next day.

The track will be ready in plenty of time for the scheduled opening weekend for the Franco's Pizza Friday Night IHRA Drag Racing program on May 8 & 9. The Seneca Resorts and Casinos Saturday Night Stock Car season begins on Saturday, May 16.
